Will I bring my costume home?
Items from school will stay at school and not be taken home. When we have our photo and costume check day next term, you will bring your items from home, put on your whole costume and have your photo taken. Afterwards, you will get back into your school uniform, give your costume items from home back to the costume team, and take your items from home back home.
On the night of the performance, you will arrive wearing your items from home. You will put on your items from school for the performance. After the show, you will give your items from school back to a teacher. You will NOT leave the theatre with any costume that belongs to the school.
What if I don't own the item that I'm being asked to provide?
Consider borrowing from a friend or family member. Kmart, Big W, Best and Less and other large stores have these items for sale, usually for $3-12 each. If you are unable to get your required items for any reason, please tell your class teacher asap.
Will I have to bring my items from home to stay at school?
Items from home will stay at home, and not be left at school. You will bring them in for the day when we have our photos and costume check day. You will not leave them at school. You will arrive at the theatre wearing your costume items from home on the night of the performance. You will leave wearing the same items. You will not leave your costume items from home at the theatre.
What if I need my costume items from home to wear on the weekend?
That is ok, because you will not leave your costume items from home at school. They will live at home.
Do I need to name my costume items from home?
Yes. Always name everything you bring from home. Always! Everything!
What if I forget what my costume looks like?
That's ok, the costume team have a list of what everyone will be wearing. Your costume items from school are all in a named bag, ready for you.
Why does my costume bag have another person's name on it?
Every costume provided by the school will be worn by two people. One person on Night A and one person on Night B. Someone else will be wearing your same costume as you on the night you're not performing. They will not be wearing your items from your home; they will have their own items from their own home.
How do I have to wear my hair?
Information about hairstyles will be sent out shortly.
Do I have to wear make-up or face paint?
Make-up is very common on stage for people of all genders, especially when they are playing a character as bright and fun as the Munchkins in Oz! More information about make-up and face paint will be sent out shortly.
Lead roles, speaking parts, and dance groups
The majority of these costumes will be provided by the school. Each student with a featured role, lead role, speaking part or dancer, will be contacted directly to tell them what they will need to provide.
Citizens of Oz Ensemble:
The majority of these costumes will be provided by the school, as we are hiring them. We will not have access to these hired costumes until the first week of August. At this time, we will ensure that every student has an appropriate costume that fits them. Students may be required to provide some basic items, such as a pair of black leggings, or a white or black t-shirt. We will limit the number of students who need to provide their own items as much as we can. We will also try to make sure that nobody is being asked to provide an item that they don’t already own, so that families do not have to purchase any items this close to the show.
Monkey Ensemble:
- Long-sleeved plain brown top.
- Long plain brown pants. Eg:
Please note that these same items will be worn when these students are in the Farmers Ensemble.
The Monkey Ensemble will have a vest, and a hat provided by the school.
Famers Ensemble:
If you are in the Monkey Ensemble, you will wear the same brown pants and top. The school will provide a beige, tan, brown or white accessory to add to your costume, such as a vest, a hat, a neck scarf, braces etc.
If you are not in the Monkey Ensemble, most of your costume will be provided by the school. These will be tried on and any alterations made asap.Students may be required to provide some basic items, such as a white or brown shirt. If you are required to provide any items, you will be notified asap.
Anyone who has been into the school over the last few weeks might have noticed the excitement in the air, as props, set pieces, and costumes are starting to pop up all over the school. At any point, you might come across a witch's broom, some yellow bricks, or some of the many, many MANY munchkin costumes. A huge thank you to the teams of volunteers who are helping this magic happen.
Keep an eye on Compass, and in your child’s school bag, as costume fittings have started, and will be continuing over the next few weeks. As students are fitted for their costumes, they will be provided with details about any items that they will need to supply from home.
Rehearsals for the songs and dances are continuing in Performing Arts classes for all grade levels, and at recess and lunchtimes for students with speaking roles or featured dancers. If your child/ren would like to practice their songs or dances at home, these can be found on the Kalinda Online site. Navigate to Specialists, Performing Arts, Production 2025, Dance Along. On this site, you will find all the dances that the class groups have been learning.
If your child has a speaking part, and they have lost their script, or if you or your family would like to read a full copy of the script, this can also be found on the Production 2025 page. Please note that you will need to be logged in using a Kalinda Google account to access these sites.
If your child has a speaking part in production, please encourage them to practise their lines at home, and then return their script to their school bag, as it is very important that all actors have their script at school every single day. We require all actors to have memorised their lines, stage directions and blocking by the end of the term.
Further details about costume requirements, hair and make-up, ticket sales and more will be coming out soon, so please stay tuned. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out via email or come and see me.
This year there are only 2 groups where the whole class will need to wear a specific item.

The school will provide for some parts of your child’s costume.
These items will be sorted out at school and stored until the night of production. Once they arrive at the theatre, they will then change into these items.
After the performance, they will change back out of these items before leaving the theatre.
Foundation students will also need to provide the following items for their costumes:
a grey long-sleeved top. Light grey if possible.
These items will remain at home, and students will need to arrive at the theatre wearing them on the night of the production. Closer to the date of the production, we will have a costume check and photoshoot, and on this day, we ask students to bring in their costume items from home to check that everyone has the correct items.
More details will be provided about this later on.
I have included some images to give you an idea of what the items from home should look like. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher or email me at sarah.butler@education.vic.gov.au

As part of our preparation for our whole school production of The Wizard of Oz we are sorting out costumes for all students in the school. This year, many parts of your child’s costume are being provided by the school. These items will be sorted out at school and stored until the night of production. Once your child arrives at the theatre, they will then change into these items. After the performance, they will change back out of these items before leaving the theatre.
Some costume items will need to be bought from home. These items will remain at home, and students will need to arrive at the theatre wearing them on the night of the production. Closer to the date of the production, we will have a costume check and photoshoot, and on this day, we ask students to bring in their costume items from home to check that everyone has the correct items.
More details will be provided about this later on.
If your child is in 34B, you will be required to supply the following:
grey leggings/plain pants. Light grey if possible.
a grey top. Because this will be worn under a jacket, it does not matter what length the sleeves are. Light grey if possible.
The other 3/4 classes will have their full costume provided for them.
The 1s and 2s are having costumes put together for them individually. They are all munchkins, so each costume is slightly different. They will each go home with a piece of paper telling them, personally, what they need to provide. These items will be simple, and the sorts of items that many people would already have, or would easily be able to borrow or buy. Eg, Plain coloured t-shirt, or white leggings, etc. This process has started, but is not finished.
The 5/6s are all different depending on what part/s they play. Like the 1s and 2s many of them are having costumes put together for them individually. Again, they will each go home with a piece of paper telling them, personally, what they need to provide. These items will be simple, and the sorts of items that many people would already have, or would easily be able to borrow or buy. Eg: Plain coloured t-shirt, black pants or white leggings etc.
Grade 5/6s who are Citizens of Oz Ensemble might need to provide some simple sorts of items, but will be told individually.
Grade 5/6s who are Monkey Ensemble will need to provide a grey long sleeved top and grey leggings/plain pants.
Grade 5/6s who are Farmers Ensemble might need to provide brown or tan tops and/or pants, skirt, shorts or overalls, but they will be told individually.
Grade 5/6 who are the main cast might need to provide items such as plain black pants, plain grey pants, grey long-sleeved top, etc.
