MENTAL STRATEGIES – TERM 3 WEEK 7 & 8

This week and next week children are focusing on the following mental strategies at school. Keep up the great practice that is happening at home.

YEAR LEVEL STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME
Foundation

Partitions of 5

What are the different number combinations we can use to make 5? 4+1. 1+4, 3+2, 2+3

  • Can you record these
  • Can you use materials at home to represent these partitions of 5.
Year 1

Partition division – with materials.

This strategy is more commonly referred to as sharing and requires children to divide an amount into the same number of groups. E.g. 28 people divided into 7 cars when travelling to a wedding.

You can practice this strategy when sharing out everyday items at home like food, lollies or even cards between a certain number of people or plates.

Year 2

Fact families up to 20- Explore the related addition and subtraction facts made from the same numbers in the range 0-20. Fore example: for the numbers 7, 8, and 15, the addition/subtraction fact family consists of 7 + 8 = 15, 8 + 7 = 15, 15 - 8 = 7, 15 - 7 = 8.

Year 3

Multiplication - Doubling

Students use the doubling strategy in multiplication to solve a problem. Doubling is a powerful multiplication strategy when multiplying by 2,4 and 8.

Year 4 & 5

Multiplication – Splitting into known parts

Students use their knowledge of partitioning and multiplication facts to solve a problem.

E.g. 14 x 6 (Student might partition this problem into 10 x 6 + 4 x 6 to solve it)

Year 6

Distributive property - Division

We can divide larger numbers using the distributive property by breaking those numbers into smaller factors.

ART - The Colour of Us

An exciting display has gone up in the hallway outside LS3. This showcases the Juniors Self Portrait Sculptures made using magic clay. Inspired by the book The Colour of Us by Karen Katz students painted their sculptures looking carefully at their unique skin tones, eye and hair colours. This display celebrates the diversity and individuality of students within our junior levels.

The senior students have completed their possum skin inspired class cloths this week and some of these are already up on display outside and in LS3. Many students have challenged themselves with sewing their fabric pieces together and enthusiastically watched the individual squares grow into a large cloth representing each member of the class as one.

The seniors are now developing ideas for a Bobble Head Clay Sculpture which they will make using pinch pots, joining and molding clay to create their design idea.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS

Our students competed in the District Athletics on Wednesday 23th August at Casey Athletics Track. Our students were excited and looking forward to competing against the other ten schools. There were several students who competed for the first time, well done to those students. Next year they will be alot more confident and experienced.

Students did extremely well in turning up to training each week, on several occasions twice a week. Our students were willing to give up their break time to enhance their techniques which reflected in their results. Overall we came 7th which was an outstanding performance. I'm proud of each and every student that participated on the day.

The following students will compete at the District Athletics on Wednesday 13th September at Cranbourne Athletic Track at Casey Fields because only first and second place progress to this stage of Athletics.

SWIMMING

Our school swimming program begins Week 1 Term 4. We would like to remind parents that swimming is a part of the PE Curriculum and as a result all students are expected to attend. Exemptions will only be provided for students with medical certificates.

Permission forms and timetables have been placed on Operoo. Permission forms were due to be completed by today.

Swimming ability forms were also sent home to all junior students, Grade 3 students and any new senior students who did not participate in our swimming program last year. These were also due today. We hope that all forms have been handed in to home group teachers. These forms will assist the pool to complete initial groupings for the students, however all students will also be assessed in their first swimming lesson. Seniors will be grouped according to the pool’s results from last year, but will also be assessed in their first swimming lesson.
