The year 3’s have had a jam-packed term !
In Reading the year 3’s have been working on exploring poetry and using the reading comprehension strategies such as analysing and critiquing, identifying theme, looking at the authors message and exploring what poetic devices were used in different types of poetry. We have also begun a film study on the movie Toy Story 4 where we will be thinking critically about the film and its structure, while sharing our thoughts and opinions.
Through our writing unit we have been writing different forms of poetry whilst ensuring we are using poetic devices such as similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification and many more. This term we have also started to explore fantasy narratives and are now in the drafting phase of the writing process. We are following the seven steps of writing and making our writing interesting by including sizzling starts, dialogue and unrealistic characters or places.
Our Maths unit involved the students representing money values in various ways and solving real life problems while correctly counting out change from financial transactions. We have also been exploring location by giving and following directions to familiar locations while also creating and interpreting simple grid maps to show positions and pathways.
In science we have been exploring Earth and space and in humanities we have been looking at geography and are completing a project by creating our very own country/island.
Within our health unit we have looked at being active and how that contributes to our health and in our respectful relationships unit we have learnt about gender equality and positive relationships.
Most importantly we have had our first ever camp and it was a great success!
The students had a blast at the Log Cabin Camp trying out many new activities including possum gliding, giant swing, flying fox, milk crate stack, trampolining and even learnt how to play gaga ball. This was a huge hit with the students. We also enjoyed a night walk learning about the local pine plantation. The huge bonfire after our walk was enjoyable as was the singing by the students.
We learned to work as a team, communicate, be independent, build resilience and we were confronted with challenges that allowed us to step outside our comfort zones.
Let’s not forget all the food we got to eat! Yumm! The talented chef provided delicious meals for us all. Chicken schnitzel, sausage rolls and hot chips, salad and chicken wraps, gooey and soft chocolate chip cookies as well as chocolate and caramel pudding was on the menu as was fresh fruit and the all-time favourite, penne bolognese . We can assure you that not one person came home from camp hungry !
This is what some year 3 students had to say about camp !
“Camp was fun. My favourite activity was the zipline” – Stella & Blake 3D
“Sausage rolls and fries was my favourite meal on Camp” – Thiago 3D
“I went up to the top of the giant swing. It was so scary but fun” – Samuel – 3D
“We learnt how to play gaga ball in the gaga pit” Jarben 3D
Below are some poems written by some students in year 3 😊
‘Enough’ by Sarah M 3A
I could cry for years
I can’t take it anymore
I want to be seen
I want to be known as something
But I feel like a tilting tower
It drives me crazy like a lunatic
It’s seriously not funny
Is this poem enough?
Are the thousands of protests enough?
Are the tears or cries enough?
If not what
IS?
Just because I am brown doesn’t mean I’m different
My culture and religion isn’t your business
I’m not exaggerating I’m just mad
And I want racism to END!
‘Painting’ by Erica B 3A
When I paint
My canvas can be big or small
My canvas is as white as snow
My paint brushes are spikey and tall
With glitter and glue
The water goes splish, splash, swoosh.
Hours tick by
I open my eyes
I see something beautiful in front of my eyes.
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.
Year 3 Team
With only a few weeks left of the school year, the Year 4’s have been busy investigating throughout their units of work.
In Literacy, students have been analysing and critiquing the Disney film Wall-E. They have begun to dive deep into the authors purpose, messages and themes; using this as inspiration when writing their own Science Fiction Narrative.
In Numeracy, students have been focusing on money and financial calculations, including budgets, calculating totals and change and comparing prices to find the best deal. They will begin to investigate the relationship between inverse operations.
In Humanities, students have been researching how countries, people and places are connected. They will use their knowledge to design their own island country, focusing on climate, natural vegetation, cultural flag, foods and traditions, as well as enforcing national anthems and rules.
Camp – The Summit
The Year 4’s are still talking about the wonderful moments they experienced at camp this term. They all enjoyed each minute and it was such a pleasure to see each individual stretch out of their comfort zone, participating in activities such as rock climbing, a flying fox, bush challenges, night walks, team games and the most anticipated activity, the MUD RUN! Let’s hear from some of the campers:
“… the reason I like camp is that I get to hang out with my friends more… … we did Tash’s ladder, flying fox and inflatable city, that day, me and my friends had a BLAST!” – Clinton 4D
“The food was good and the whole experience. The cabins were organised.” – Ryan 4C
“At camp, we had a great experience … most people didn’t want to leave.” – Marley 4A
“My favourite part of camp was when we had to find the magical creatures” – Emilia 4A
“Half way through the night walk, Jayne, Miss McDerrmott and Mrs Stead, scared me about ‘itchygowobbolers and I started to scream very loud. Even the front could hear me.” – Bianca 4D
“I had a very fun experience at camp. We learnt how to get out of your comfort zone and to set challenges for ourselves... the activities were so much fun… the mud run and waterslide were fun.” – Raunaq 4A
“At camp, I enjoyed getting stuck on the flying fox because it was a good view of the camp. My friends helped me get unstuck.” – Bill 4C
As the year is coming to an end, the festive celebrations have started. All students are looking forward to their excursion to Fun Fields, on Friday 8th December, Christmas concert rehearsals are underway and all students are looking forward on reflecting on the successful year they’ve had!
''In year 4, kindness is our jam!''
Year 4 Team
On Tuesday the 5th of December, the Year 5’s went to Luna Park as part of their end of year celebration. The ride to get there was approximately 40mins. The most popular rides at Luna Park include The Scenic Railway (the oldest rollercoaster in Australia), The Speedy Beetles, The Twin Dragon and more. We had 4 whole hours of unlimited rides. We went with our friends around the park. Some of the Year 5’s favourite rides were the Pharos Curse (the upside down scissors!) and the Supernova. Unfortunately not all of the rides were open, but we still had an amazing time there.

With less than 1 week left of primary school! Wow!
In Reading, we have been analysing the film “The Greatest Showman”. We have been exploring the range of songs and lyrics to identify the mood, themes, and purpose so we understand the director’s intentions!
In Writing, we have been creating our own film reviews. We got to give our honest opinion of a range of movies and transform this into a written piece! Additionally, we were able to improve our narrative writing skills in preparation for NAPLAN next year 😊
In Maths, we have been learning how to plot cartesian planes just like the pilots do and how to calculate elapsed time! Check out some of the work we made plotting points on a cartesian plane!
In other news, we have been split up into Electives in order to prepare for year 7 as a part of our transition. This week in Art we made come cardboard Christmas decorations, check out our creations! In Horrible Histories we learnt all about the French Revolution and made protest posters, also in Games & Activities we engaged in trivia and card games. Finally in Sports Clinic we completed a Volleyball Competition, congratulations to the winning team!
We have had a fun time with our buddies in SMP and in our classrooms with our buddies making paper planes! Ultimately, we cannot wait for our end of year celebration at Go climb and our Graduation Night – goodbye primary school!
