Kilvington Camp Program - Embracing challenges and building connections

One of the most anticipated student experiences at Kilvington is our camp program.

In Junior School, Years 3 and 4 students attend camp at Jungai in September — an especially exciting milestone for our Year 3s, as it marks their very first camp. In October, Year 5 students step back in time with a visit to Sovereign Hill, while our Year 6s enjoy a memorable final Junior School camp in Canberra.

In Senior School, our Year 7s headed into the natural world in February. Most recently, in April, Years 8, 10, 11 and 12 students ventured out on their own camp adventures, while our Year 9s will have their turn in September.

Whether it’s hiking, team challenges or time around the campfire, camps offer plenty of opportunities for fun, discovery and growth. But, most importantly, every camp gives our students the chance to step out of their comfort zones, take on new challenges and build stronger connections with their peers and teachers.

THE TRUE VALUE OF CAMP

I have long admired Kilvington’s motto: 'Not for our own, but others' good' — a guiding princip which reminds us of the importance of empathy and looking out for each other. This is especially relevant during the adolescent years, when students are trying to define their own individual identity. Our camp program offers the perfect opportunity for students to actively live out this ideal.

Away from their usual routines and the comforts of home, students are given the chance to look beyond themselves. By lifting one another through shared challenges, students come to realise that true growth is not found in personal achievement alone, but in the relationships strengthened through kindness and perseverance.

More than just time away from the classroom, camps are a big part of Kilvington’s commitment to holistic learning. Each experience provides students with opportunities for collaboration, resilience, empathy and leadership — skills that will stay with them long after the tents are packed away.

YEARS 7 AND 8 CAMP HIGHLIGHTS

I had the pleasure of visiting our Years 7 and 8 students during their camps in Golden Valley in Terms 1 and 2.

It was genuinely uplifting to see the way our students supported one another—whether it was offering a steadying hand, cheering on teammates as they tackled tough obstacles, or providing encouragement when the journey became difficult.

Through these small yet powerful acts of service, many of our students discovered new strengths within themselves. I was proud to see them grow in confidence, face challenges with courage, and demonstrate leadership. The spirit of inclusion and encouragement was unmistakable—and it’s exactly what makes the Kilvington community so special.

We’re excited to build on these moments of growth and connection as students return to School, ready to bring those lessons into everyday school life!
