Prep Community News
Dear Prep families and carers,
We are so close to the end of Term 4 now! The students have worked so hard all year, and it really shows in all the amazing work that they are continuing to show us. As we near the end of the term, we are excited to share all the continued learning that has happened during Weeks 9 and 10!
Synthetic Phonics:
In Weeks 9 and 10 we began revising all of the spelling choices that we learnt throughout Term 4. These include final y, ee, oo, ai, ay, oa, ow, igh and ea. Teachers chose the spelling rules that they wanted to revise with their own students. It was wonderful to see the students solidify their understanding and remember all of the learnt spelling patterns. During these weeks we also revised all of the heart words that we had learnt throughout the term. The students have worked very hard to learn 8 new heart words this term. These are all of the heart words we learnt during Term 4, which the students can continue to practise at home when reading and writing.
Reading:
In Weeks 9 & 10, we continued utilising our serial text ‘The Enchanted Wood’ to further develop our reading skills. We revised the reading skills of inferring the characters’ feelings and making text-to-self connections. It has been great for us to allow them to further deepen their understanding, especially when reflecting on their own experiences to understand and relate to the characters in the text, as a way to form deeper connections.
Writing:
During Week 9 we learnt how to write a letter. Students became familiar with the purpose of a letter and what is included when writing one. One of the tasks was for students to write a letter to their Grade 1 teacher. In this letter they were able to give their future teacher a bit of an insight into who they are, such as what their favourite things are and what they enjoy doing at school. Students also had the chance to ask their future teacher some questions.
Week 10 has been a revision week in writing, where teachers have been revising all of the learnt topics throughout Term 4. Including narratives, lists, cards and letters. These weeks of writing revision have been wonderful for us to enable students the chance to further deepen their understanding and show us their amazing writing skills!
Maths:
Weeks 9 and 10, were revision weeks that consisted of students spending time deepening their understanding of numeracy topics taught throughout the year in a variety of engaging activities. The maths revision lessons have consisted of topics such as patterns, addition, subtraction, 2D and 3D shapes. It is essential that children are given more time to consolidate their understanding of learnt topics. Students may continue to practise these topics at home to show you all the things they have learnt.
Reminders:
- Please remember to keep hats in your school bags.- Please bring a water bottle to school every day.
- Please ensure students dress appropriately for the warmer weather.
Warmest Wishes,
PLC Prep
