Visual Arts News

Prep

In Visual Arts, the prep students read the picture story book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Previously, they created a sculpture of the caterpillar in the story using coloured plasticine and pipe cleaners. In the following lesson, they used diffusing paper, pegs and pipe cleaners to create a butterfly sculpture. Students focused on blending watercolors and creating new colours when painting their wings. Last week, the preps learnt to use patterns to create an image. They used shape and line to draw a cartoon-style hedgehog, then used primary coloured paint slicks to add patterns for the animal’s spines. We hope you have enjoyed seeing their creations this semester!

Grade 1 & 2

The grade one and two students were recently introduced to artworks created by New Zealand artist, Raewyn Harris. Raewyn’s artworks often feature the koru plant (unfurling fern fronds found in New Zealand), which is a symbol used in Maori artwork. Students were inspired by the artist to create their own koru designs. They used line to draw spiral koru plants, as well as other fern fronds, leaves and vines. They painted their work, using greens and other cool colours for the ferns, then chose warm colours for the background to add contrast. Last week, the grade ones and twos learnt about llamas and their colourful traditional costumes. They completed a guided drawing of a llama, then added costume designs with marker, pom-poms and sequins. We hope you have enjoyed seeing all the beautiful artworks your children have created this semester!

Grade 3 & 4

Recently, the grade three and four students explored artworks by Aboriginal artist, Rosemary Pitjara. Rosemary paints bush medicine leaf designs, which show careful use of pattern and movement. In the first week, students painted a background using either warm or cool colours. They focused on blending colours and creating texture/pattern. In the following week, they cut out leaf shapes and collaged them onto black paper. The students positioned them in different ways to show movement, then added pattern designs to add more interest to their work. We hope you have enjoyed seeing your child’s artworks as they bring home their folders!

Grade 5 & 6

The grade five and six students have been finishing off their art projects over the last two weeks. Some classes completed painting of their textured natural disasters, while others completed a small project on street art. Last week, all classes worked on creating a pop-art inspired self-portrait, as an end of year celebration. Students traced a photo of their face in black marker, then used bright coloured pastels to fill in their face and complete their portrait. We hope you have enjoyed seeing all the beautiful artworks your children have created this semester!
