Grade 5 Community News
Dear Year 5 families,
The year has flown by so quickly. We are so proud of the year 5 students and how much they have grown in 2024. We look forward to watching them take their place as the leaders of Tarneit Rise Primary School in 2025!
Reading
In the last few weeks of the year we are reading the inspirational text ‘Break the Mould’ by Sinead Burke. This text further supports what the student’s have learnt about in ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio, offering students a chance to explore empathy, identity, differing perspectives and how to use your voice to activate for the good of the whole. Sinead is an inspirational speaker, activist and person. She has faced many challenges and found ways to overcome them. Sinéad Burke's experiences highlight how she has faced barriers (both physical and societal) and found creative ways to overcome them. Her resilience has shown our students that obstacles can be met with perseverance and creative problem-solving.
Writing
In Writing, we have been studying and exploring inspirational speeches and writing speeches of our own. We have taken examples from the texts we have read to advocate for topics we are passionate about. Week 10 has seen the students perform their speeches for their classes inspiring everyone. To further support our reading fluency, students have watched some inspiring stories on TedTalks and analysed how the speaker writes and presents.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have been revising different areas of the maths curriculum to further cement the concepts for the year 5 students.
Vocabulary
In vocabulary, we learn 6 new words each week. These words will be gathered from text ‘Break the Mould’ and other topics we are currently studying. We look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. When we use previous vocabulary words as synonyms and antonyms for our new words, it helps us understand the new words better.
