Careers & Pathways
Greetings Bemin community on making it to the end of our very first year!
I have a few things to report from the Careers Hub.
Our students were lucky enough to attend a Year 10 University session with ACU. We were treated to a specialised discussion about ACU course offerings before taking part in a workshop on Business. Students got together in teams to pitch their idea for a new and innovative product. Students were able to visit the Law faculty and get a feel of a real court room with sitting in ACU's mock court. Next students learnt about Nursing and Midwifery offered at ACU. They heard from Lecturers in the faculty who spoke about the skills required for the course. A quick game with medical terminology was played – where our students excelled.
I was also lucky enough to book a Year 7 excursion for selected Year 7s to Quantum Victoria. Here students had an exciting time, matching code, working with DNA sequences and problem solving what to do in a pandemic crisis. It was a fantastic day for all who took part in it, you can see from the photos that students were very engaged.
As students mature and move into senior school, they can work towards their individual career aspirations. This may be continuing schooling or pursuing something external to the College. I was able to assist one of our students, Letishar to secure an apprenticeship in Roof Tiling. (See photo above) I am extremely proud of her efforts in her new role. Letishar has proven that learning exists beyond the classroom and part of her success was her ability to work closely with myself in the Careers Hub to gain full time employment and training.
Headstart, the Education Department initiative has been working closely with Bemin. We are grateful for all the work Debbie Hema does to assist students to meet their in-school apprenticeship or traineeship goals. Read on to hear from Debbie. Before then, I would like to wish you all a restful and safe break, I look forward to working with each one of you when we resume in 2025.
Charmaine de Sousa – Careers and Pathways Leader.
Are you interested in a school based apprenticeship?
My name is Debbie and I would like to introduce my role as HeadStart Coordinator in the Wyndham area.
My role is to assist students in years 10-12 within Government schools to participate in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) program where they receive paid on-the-job training that contributes to their VCE VM program that leads to a qualification in their chosen industry.
I work with students in 8 schools including Bemin Secondary College which is also my home school.
Interested students should preferably have completed some work experience within their chosen pathway, should be prepared to also contact employers and prepared to travel.
In early 2025 I will be having conversations with students to discuss their chosen pathway and assess their ‘work readiness’ in obtaining a School based apprenticeship.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please speak with your college Careers Practitioner, Charmaine De Sousa to discuss the possibility of an SBAT, who will then refer you on to the Head Start Coordinator.
