Dear Parents,

Novel Studies in K-6 Learning

At our school, we believe that fostering a love for reading and critical thinking is central to student success. Novel studies are an integral part of the new English curriculum, offering students opportunities to engage deeply with literature, develop analytical skills, and build a lifelong appreciation for books.

Through the study of age-appropriate and diverse texts, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 explore themes, characters, and settings that ignite curiosity and promote empathy. Novel studies help students hone their comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills while providing a platform for meaningful class discussions. By connecting the narratives to real-world contexts, we ensure students not only enjoy reading but also learn to think critically about broader societal issues.

Across K-6, we have implemented tailored approaches to text studies. Younger students delve into picture books and simple novels, focusing on retelling stories, identifying characters, and understanding key ideas. As students progress through the years, they engage with more complex novels, analysing literary techniques and exploring themes such as resilience, friendship, and courage. Each study is complemented by creative activities, including writing, art, and drama, which help bring the stories to life.

Parents can play an active role in supporting their child’s love for books by discussing what they are reading. Ask open-ended questions like, “What did you enjoy most about the story?” or “What do you think will happen next?” Encourage them to share their thoughts on characters, motivations, or how they might have handled situations differently. For older children, explore themes by asking how they relate to their experiences or current events.

These conversations not only strengthen comprehension but also make reading a shared and enjoyable activity.

Happy reading!

Warm regards,

Nick Criniti
