Principal Newsletter Report – Final One for 2024
As we approach the end of another remarkable year at Melbourne Girls’ College, it is with pride that we reflect on the successes of 2024. Across all areas of the college; curriculum, student engagement and wellbeing, co-curricular, and extracurricular, our students have continued to excel and embody the values of excellence, teamwork, and diversity that define MGC. From academic achievements to sporting accomplishments, creative pursuits, and community engagement, our students have demonstrated dedication at every turn.
This term has been particularly eventful, marking the successful conclusion of the VCAA Exams and our Year 10 and Year 11 exams, the Year 10 Work Experience Program, and the 2025 Headstart Program for senior students. These programs provided valuable opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically and lean into 2025 with a positive attitude.
Our formal classes for Years 7 to 9 will conclude on Wednesday, 11 December, with the end of year program beginning on Thursday, 12 December. Year 7 and 8 students celebrated the conclusion of their year with two exciting days at Bounce and Fun Fields on Thursday and Friday this week. It was a wonderful way to bring together each year level and celebrate the 2024 school year.
It is the season of celebration and excellence, and we congratulate all students who were recognised for their achievements at the recent MGC Sports Breakfast, the Aerobics Presentation Evening, and the upcoming AAFC Parade and Presentation Evening. These events highlight the breadth of talent, dedication, and achievement across the college and the outstanding efforts of our students in a range of fields.
On Tuesday, 26 November, we celebrated our Year 7 to 11 Presentation Evening at the Plaza Ballroom. This event was a highlight of the year, showcasing the incredible talents and achievements of our students. The evening was made even more special by the presence of our four past principals: founding Principal Cavell Zangalis, Jan Parkes, Judy Crowe, and Karen Money. Each of these remarkable leaders has left a meaningful legacy, shaping Melbourne Girls’ College into the exceptional place it is today; that is a college that prepares young women to lean into the world with confidence, compassion, and determination. Their leadership has contributed to the proud history of MGC, and it was a special time to honour their contributions.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our parents and carers for walking alongside us in this journey throughout the year. Your trust, and belief in both your children and our college, is deeply valued. A special thanks also goes to our School Council for their leadership and commitment to the college’s growth. I would like to particularly acknowledge Kristina Popova, our Council President and proud alumna. Kristina embodies the spirit of MGC with her inspiring leadership and commitment to service, setting a powerful example for our students.
As we close the chapter on this successful year, we also look forward to welcoming the new 2025 Year 7 cohort on Orientation Day, which is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 December. This is always a special day as we greet the newest members of our college community and begin their journey with us.
Thank you to our entire MGC community; students, staff, parents, and carers for your support, trust, and contributions to making 2024 such a wonderful year. As we celebrate 30 years, we honour our past, celebrate the present, and look to the future with optimism and purpose. Melbourne Girls' College continues to empower young women to lead, achieve, and make meaning of the world. We are proud to be a government girls’ school, driving opportunities, delivering excellence and caring for our young people.
We wish you all a safe holiday season and look forward to another exceptional year ahead.
