What's been happening this week?

Japanese

During the Connect program, students in Year One to Six have been focusing on Daruma dolls. These traditional dolls are more than just toys, they’re filled with meaning. Our curious minds have been busy discovering the stories and traditions behind these special dolls.

In our classroom discussions, we’ve been exploring the valuable lessons we can learn from Daruma dolls.  The dolls are designed to return to the upright position when tilted or knocked down, symbolizing resilience. They are connected to the Japanese proverb 七転び八起き(fall down 7 times, get up 8). We’ve talked about setting goals, being resilient and never giving up.

As part of their first Japanese lesson, the Prep students made a crown with some Japanese icons that they may be familiar with and that we searched for in a video clip. Their crown also had their name written in Japanese.

1/2S OFF TO A GREAT START

Our students in Year 1/2 worked collaboratively to build relationships with one another, through play and exploration.

SCHOOLWIDE CONNECT PROGRAM

OUR JUNIORS

The Connect Program was a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know our classmates and teachers and learn classroom routines. Check out the photos below!

OUR MIDDLES

Year 3/4 have been all smiles throughout the Connect program in Weeks 1 and 2. Existing students have been welcoming of the students new to BHNPS, and have been getting to know their new classes and teachers with fun activities. We have created classroom displays to represent the diverse members of our classes, started using computers, played sport in mini Platoon, and spent our first session in the Kitchen Garden! We've also been exploring our 4 school values and working together to make our classes safe and happy to learn in.

We can't wait for an amazing 2024 with an amazing Middles cohort!

THE WONDERFUL WEEK IN PREP

Our students have displayed courage this week being our first week of full days at school.

We enjoyed meeting Milo Monkey and Sally the Snake from our Little Learners Love Literacy program. Students have been practising recognising these sounds at the beginning of words and writing the letter.

In Maths we enjoyed measuring our heights – to then compare how much we’ve grown by December. We then watched ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ and investigated how many letters in our name and then searched for the letters and put it on our own ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ tree.

It has been great seeing strong friendships form already as our students have been learning to ask each other questions.

Our students also enjoyed their first sessions of Specialist – Japanese, Performing Arts and Visual Arts and will have their first PE lesson tomorrow with Emily.

We look forward to the evermore memories to be made in Prep and can’t wait to share this every week.
