Mathematics News - Mrs Nellie Girgenti

Dear Parents,

In 2023, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were introduced to The Three Reads Protocol. to support students in improving their problem-solving skills. The Three Reads Protocol is one way to do a close read of a mathematics word problem. This strategy includes reading a maths word problem three times with a different goal each time. The first read is to understand the context. The second read is to understand the mathematics. The third read is to elicit inquiry questions based on the scenario.

This year we will continue to routinely use this strategy for solving problems, as a whole class and in small groups, and engage the students in sense-making of language-rich math problems or tasks. The aim is to deepen student understanding by surfacing linguistic as well as mathematical clues and focusing on the importance of understanding problems rather than rapidly trying to solve them.

Educationally yours,

Ms Nellie Girgenti
