5/6 News

It has been a brilliant start to the year in the 5/6 cohort. There have been many exciting experiences taking place!

A real excitement for the Grade 6 leaders was receiving their respective leadership badges and presenting to the 3 - 6 cohort, what a leader means to them. Everyone was so impressed with their speeches and the way in which the leaders conduct themselves each day at school.

The Morning Circle has been implemented in each 5/6 classroom this year. This has been a wonderful way to set the expectations for the day and allow students to share any special announcements to their fellow class members. All students feel comfortable to share in front of their peers, highlighting the inclusive classroom environments that the 5/6 team have established.

In Reading, we have consolidated a range of comprehension strategies. These include, summarising, questioning, identifying the main idea, skimming and scanning and beyond the text comprehension. It has been great to see students challenge themselves by reading complex texts.

In Writing, we have focused on two text types; narratives and persuasives. This has been a major focus on preparation for Grade 5 NAPLAN. There have been exceptional and captivating writing pieces. We have focused on a vast range of literary devices to engage the reader. A major focus has been the skill of imagery and show don’t tell. This allowed those reading students’ work, to visualise what is happening in their writing.

In Mathematics, we have seen students challenge themselves to extend their understanding of a range of new mathematical concepts. We have had a large focus on the four operations and deconstructing worded questions. Students have learned a range of strategies to solve equations and apply these skills to worded questions.

In Inquiry, our driving question for the term is; ‘What have scientists discovered about space?’ From our wonderings, there have been many fascinating discussions and research taking place. For the Going Further, students are creating a 3D model, a visual display of information and a stop motion video of their chosen topic. There are a range of topics being investigated including famous astrologists, planets, black holes, different galaxies and stars. We are so impressed with the creativity and initiative that the students are taking!

We are looking forward to a wonderful finish to Term 1!
