Social / Emotional Learning

This term saw the start of our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills program. The Department of Education focuses on the learning and wellbeing of every student.

Wellbeing is defined as the development of the capabilities necessary to thrive, contribute and respond positively to the challenges and opportunities of life (DET, 2021). The five areas the program will focus come from Heart-Mind Wellbeing resource developed by the Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education.

Secure and Calm - the ability to take part in daily activities and approach new situations without being overwhelmed with worries, sadness or anxiety.

Compassionate and Kind – the ability to have empathy for others and to take steps to alleviate the distress of another.

Gets Along with Others – the ability to form positive and healthy relationships with peers and adults.

Alert and Engaged – the ability to manage and direct one’s own feelings, thoughts and emotions to maintain self-control.

Solves Problems Peacefully – managing conflict effectively using empathy, problem-solving skills, understanding other points of view and coming up with ways to make things right in a fair way.

Please ask your child what they are learning about and how it is helping them develop their social skills and ways to understand and manage themselves.
