Just Macbeth Rehearsals

We are well and truly immersed in the creative world of devising our version of Just Macbeth. We have over 30 students involved in the creative process from performers to visual artists, musicians and dancers. They are supported by some fabulous staff who are generously giving their time and creative talents to bring the show to life. We look forward to taking you on a comedic journey into the world of Shakespeare like you've never experienced before - who thought 'beheadings' could be funny?

A copy of the revised and final rehearsal schedule is below. All students involved know how critical it is that they attend all rehearsals and workshops and I thank them for their dedication. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms Karen Cassidy.

Tickets go on sale at the start of Term 2. There will be limited shows so get in quick!

Annie

Congratulations to our very talented Cheyenne Lin (Year 9), who will be taking the stage at the Regal Theatre from Friday, 12 April to Sunday, 14 April as Pepper in HAMA Productions' performance of Annie.

This timeless classic has charmed audiences for generations with its unforgettable characters and uplifting story. From the catchy tunes of 'Easy Street' to the iconic anthem of 'Tomorrow', the show will be sure to leave you smiling and singing all the way home.

Hear what Cheyenne has to say:

  1. What is your role in the upcoming performance of Annie? I was cast as Pepper, one of the featured orphans.
  2. What was the audition process like for you? The audition process was quite long, but was an amazing learning experience. I was also privileged to witness the talent of over 300 dancers from all over Perth who auditioned.
  3. What are you most looking forward to about the performance? I am most looking forward to performing with my newly made friends and making the most of this fantastic experience.
  4. Have you performed in a school production or local theatre production in the past? This is my first theatre production ever, but it is my plan to audition for many more! As my experience so far in the rehearsals has been nothing but fun!

Mary Poppins Jnr

Keeping with the theme of the Arts newsletter this week, we're thrilled to share that our talented Nick Navarra (Year 12) has secured the role of Robertson Ay in Bel Canto Performing Arts' youth production of Mary Poppins Jnr. Nick will perform alongside many talented actors and actresses, including Isabella Giuffre (Class of 2023). Rehearsals are currently underway with the show scheduled to grace the Old Mill Theatre in June.

Hear what Nick has to say:

  1. What is your role in the upcoming performance of Mary Poppins? I am playing the role of Robertson Ay, the incompetent houseboy to the Banks family. Although not seen in the movie, this character is featured in the original books by P.L Travers and so has been specifically added to the musical edition of Mary Poppins. In addition to this, I am also a Music Director for the production, often accompanying the cast on the piano, or conducting them during rehearsal.
  2. What was the audition process like for you? It was a fairly standard audition process, I attended the audition day at the theatre, where I had to sing a song of my choice in front of the creative team. I was then asked to read the script for several different characters where they mixed and matched people to see who worked well together. No comment on the dance section of the audition...
  3. What are you most looking forward to about the performance? Definitely tech week, where the whole production really comes together with the set and lighting and such. Seeing it all come together really makes it all worth it.
  4. Have you performed in a school production or local theatre production in the past? I'm still a relative newcomer to theatre. I performed in two school productions as Lionel in Cinderella in 2021 and Linus van Pelt in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 2023. In 2022, I performed in two operas with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA, performing in the Peers chorus in Iolanthe, and singing the role of the Herald in The Grand Duke. In 2023 I also performed in Bel Canto Performing Art's production of Anything Goes as Sir Evelyn Oakleigh.

If you'd like to see Nick in action, you will be able to secure your tickets via the Bel Canto Performing Arts website in the coming weeks.

Dance Auditions

On Thursday, 7 March (Week 6), we were grateful to witness over 60 students audition for our 2024 Dance Teams. The process was highly competition and I extend my congratulations to all students who shared their gifts and talents with us.

Our co-curricular dance program consists of three talented teams including our Junior Dance Team (Years 7 to 9), Senior Dance Team (Years 10 to 12) and Canons Hip Hop Crew (Years 7 to 12) and aims to foster the growth of participating students choreography, collaboration and performance skills. We're excited to share in the creative journey with our teams in 2024, as we prepare for various performance events throughout the year.

Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering- Steve Maraboli

Thank you to everyone who participated in the audition process.

Year 10 Music Excursion

On Wednesday, 13 March (Week 7), our Year 10 Music students had the pleasure of attending an open rehearsal of the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) at the Perth Concert Hall. We witnessed WASO rehearsing Tchaikovsky’s 'Symphony No.4', an emotionally vibrant piece by the Russian composer, full of technical prowess. Through the performance, students were able to gain an understanding about what Western Art Music is.

We also attended a pre-rehearsal talk with WASO Cellist, Nicholas Metcalfe, who gave us further insight into the Tchaikovsky piece, the rehearsal process, and his life as an orchestra member.
