Science at BPS

This term in Science, all year levels will be doing a Biology unit. We will be looking at plants, animals and dinosaurs!

Foundation students have begun the term by looking at what plants need to grow. We have begun an experiment using cress seeds. In groups, we put the seeds on three plates. Two of the plates got water and the third plate we left dry. One of the plates with water stayed in the sun and the other one is in a dark room. We are seeing which one will grow best! What do you think?

Year 1 and 2 became plant explorers on their first lesson, heading out to our school yard to see what type of plants we have growing and if we could notice similarities and differences. We will be moving on to growing chickpeas and learning about the different features of a plant.

3 and 4 students have begun an experiment looking at the life cycle of a plant. We have planted broad bean seeds and have made predictions about whether we think the seeds will have germinated by the time we have Science next. Year 3 and 4 students are very excited because we will be using the microscopes this term to look at different features of plants, including pollen and a cross section of a flower stem.

Students in Year 5 and 6 have started looking at animal adaptation and why these occur. This is a big idea and it has been amazing to see some of the thinking from our students. We will be spending time looking at our Science skills this term, focusing on questioning, predicting, observing and analysing.

A huge thank you to Spencer (FS) and Chloe and Trent for washing all of the lab coats over the holidays. And thank you to everyone who offered to take them home! There will be lots of opportunities I am sure!

I am still collecting jars and bottles, particularly jars this term. So please keep bringing them in!

Why did the germ cross the microscope? To get to the other slide!!

Have a fab Term 3!!
