Principals message

Dear parents/carers,

Narrandera High School has been a busy place Term 1 with a range of extra-curricular activities taking place. I am always grateful to the staff who give up their time to take students on excursions and run activities at lunch time to allow students to engage in activities which mean so much to them. The numerous sporting teams, STEM activities, creative and performing arts groups and curriculum excursions are highly valued within the Narrandera High School community and support student engagement at school. I am thankful to the staff for taking the students for each of these activities and to the staff who cover classes while students are on excursions.

The P&C are important members of the Narrandera High School community. The AGM was held recently, and I would like to thank out going President, Maree Rainbird for her years of dedication and commitment to the P&C and the Narrandera High School community.

The Narrandera High School P&C Executive for 2024 are:

  • President – Vicki Hall
  • Vice President – Fiona McPherson
  • Secretary – Craig Taylor
  • Treasurer – Lee Anne Broad

I look forward to working with the new P&C executive in 2024. The P&C meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm at Narrandera High School in the STEM Centre. I invite all parents and carers to come along to these meetings and to become involved in the P&C.

NAPLAN is coming to a close for 2024 with students in Years 7 and 9 completing online tests in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. The set up and organisation for these tests is a huge task and I would like to thank the Head Teacher Administration, Rochelle McDonald and the Technical Support Officer (TSO), Fiona Gawne for all their efforts which have allowed NAPLAN to run as smoothly as it has.

Why do students sit the  NAPLAN assessments?

NAPLAN is used to monitor and report on student achievement in a comparable and consistent way. It is the only full cohort national test undertaken by students and provides nationally comparable data about literacy and numeracy achievement across the country.

Australian students' results in NAPLAN are an important measure of our education system because they tell us, at both the national, the state and school level, how well we are equipping young Australians with critical literacy and numeracy skills.

  • NAPLAN, and testing generally, provide information about how children are progressing in school and how they compare to their peers across the country.
  • For governments, NAPLAN data can inform priority areas for resourcing, so that funds can be directed to where they are needed most.
  • For teachers, NAPLAN gives access to student results for each question, which teachers can use to develop appropriate intervention strategies to improve outcomes. Student results allow schools to develop targeted and individual learning programs to improve student educational outcomes.
  • For parents, NAPLAN provides information on how their child is performing against national standards, not just against other children in a class.
  • For students, NAPLAN provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate what they have learned.

As Term 1 comes to an end, students in Stage 6 will sit for examinations in Week 11. During Week 11,  students in Stage 6 will be in class on Monday, sitting exams Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and in class on Friday. These examinations will take place in the school hall and students are only required to be at school when they have an examination on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Best of luck to all the students sitting examinations at this time.
