Grade 3/4

3/4A - Ms Resul, 3/4B - Mrs Oxley, 3/4C

Reading

In reading, we have continued to explore the comprehension strategy of summarising. We have learnt how to summarise a nonfiction text by identifying the main idea and supporting details. We have had the opportunity to practise summarising in mini lessons, teaching groups and in independent reading sessions.

3/4B have also enjoyed reading George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl this term. We have two chapters left to read together and we can't wait to find out how the story ends. I wonder what chapter book we will enjoy reading together in Term 3!

Reading sessions are definitely one of our favourite parts of the day!

Writing

The grade 3/4s have continued to compose information reports. We have researched, planned and started to draft our reports about Uluru. It has also been great to improve our understanding of using paragraphs to structure and organise ideas in our writing.

We have also been busy writing our Semester Reflections. We are sure students will enjoy sharing their reflections with everyone at home when they bring them home this week.

Our grammar focus this week has been on compound words. Students enjoyed making compound word chatterboxes!

Maths

We have been very busy in numeracy this fortnight! We have explored subtraction, place value and measurement!

Students have enjoyed practising mental subtraction strategies such as count back 1/2/3, doubles and make to 10. It has been fun learning these strategies through games and puzzles!

In place value, students have continued to build their understanding of renaming numbers in different ways. We have used concrete materials to represent numbers in different ways. For example, 375 can be represented as 3 hundreds, 7 tens and 5 ones, and then it can be renamed as 37 tens and 5 ones.

In measurement, we have explored capacity. It was so much fun measuring the capacity of containers in millilitres and litres. Our problem solving task this week involved developing 'Soft Drink Potions'. Students had to make a recipe for a 1 litre potion using different flavours of soft drink! Our favourite part was making and drinking the potions!

SEL

In Social and Emotional Learning, our focus has been on character strengths. It has been lovely celebrating our character strengths and recognising how we are all different. We have started making powerpoint presentations celebrating the special parts of ourselves. This has also been a great way for us to continue to develop our ICT skills.

Literacy Buddies

It was very exciting this week when the grade 4s received their first letter from their Big Buddies. Students have already written a reply back to their Big Buddy and the letters will be sent off next week. It will be exciting when we receive more mail from our Big Buddies after the holidays.
