Literacy

We have continued to develop Information Reports about animals, focusing on where they live, what they eat, what they look like. It was special that our families could join us on Monday during our showcase open morning to help us with our reports about koalas.

The students have been developing their segmenting and blending skills when reading - aiming to segment in their head and then say the blended word to support fluency. Students have been engaging in lots of activities to support their development of their heart word knowledge, and build their automaticity when reading.

This week we have focused on the letters Kk and Uu when it makes the short /u/ sound like in 'cut', 'hut', 'mud', 'fun' with a particular focus of it in words. Prep A made kites and wrote CVC words with the medial sound /u/. They flew them up in the sun for some fun.

MILO'S BIRTHDAY PARTY

As we finish learning about the letters of the alphabet and meet Milo's friends, we will be celebrating Milo's Birthday Party on Friday 28th June. We will be making and drinking Milo and playing some fun games to celebrate.

Numeracy

During Numeracy sessions, the Foundation students have been exploring addition. Students have identified part-part-whole for numbers to 10, and experimented with using materials and number lines to solve addition problems. They have been exposed to other strategies such as the count all and count on strategy to solve simple addition problems.

Inquiry

During our inquiry focus on History, the Foundation students have been learning about their families, culture, the countries they are from, and occasions they celebrate. During assembly, Prep A taught the 1/2 cohort how to say hello in the different languages that are represented within our classroom.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

This week we have been discussing cooperation and what it looks like at school. The students in Prep B had to work together to solve a problem in our classroom. We discussed that if we split up to tackle different parts of the problem, it would be solved quicker than if we all tried to work on the problem individually.

We watched this video to support our learning - https://youtu.be/kihZUsADQTQ

You can discuss how your child can cooperate at home, what tasks need cooperation from children, adults and a combination of both.

Showcase - Open Morning

Thank you to all our families who joined us on our open morning. It was fantastic to discuss the children's progress with their families as well as share some of our learning.

Things to remember:

  • Homework goes home on Mondays and comes back to school on Fridays.
  • Families are welcome to come to our cohort and school assemblies on Fridays at 2:30. Cohort assemblies are held in the large Grade 1/2 space (through the blue door), and the school assemblies will be held outside under the COLA (unless otherwise advised).
  • As the weather is becoming cooler, students are encouraged to bring/wear warm coats/jackets, mittens/gloves, beanies or earmuffs outside.
  • Please ensure your child has fruit, a snack, and lunch as well as a water bottle.
  • Lunch orders - Please ensure all lunch orders are placed in the lunch order basket at the beginning of the day. Occasionally, students have forgotten to place lunch orders in the basket and have had an emergency lunch provided.
  • Keep up the positive after-school routines (homework, dinner conversations, bedtime).
  • Don't forget - School begins at 8:35am daily. Students that attend after 8:50am will need to sign in at the office.

Things you can work on at home:

  • Letter and sound recognition (recognising upper and lowercase letters and their most common sound) for all letters of the alphabet.
  • Heart word recognition (recognising explicitly taught words) - My, my, The, the, I, Me, me, like, can, to, so, go, was, we, she, he, do, of, are, too, for, her, see, say, day, into, you.
  • Reading a shared book every night focusing on concepts of print (identifying the front cover, a word, a letter, 1:1 finger pointing, talking about the story and using specific vocabulary)
  • Fine motor activities – using playdoh, cutting, threading – to strengthen hand muscles
  • Build and write taught CV (consonant vowel) no, go, do, to, VC (vowel consonant), is, am on, up, and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words, cat, met, top, pit, nut etc
  • Having nightly dinner conversations with the family (talk about the day)
  • Have your child help out in the kitchen by measuring ingredients when you are making meals, and counting items that are going in the basket at the shops. This will assist in developing counting skills
  • Look at some of the information provided under the Literacy, Numeracy and SEL/Inquiry headings and review these tasks to reinforce learning.
