Talented Maths Students’ Day At  MDCC

On Thursday 27th of  June, Mrs Lloyd took fifteen of our talented Year 8 Maths students to a fun day of collaboration and competition with maths puzzles and games. Students met up with other Year 8 students from various schools around Wagga and the day was organised by Inquisitive Minds - a Sydney based educational business. The day provided students with hands-on activities and problem solving workshops which have been designed to improve students’ attitude and performance in Maths.

See what the students have written:

Thank you so much for the opportunity to go to Mater Dei for the Inquisitive Minds Maths day. During the day we had to do heaps of Maths work with a partner. We started the day with some riddles and then went into some competitions. Zara and I were a team for the first part of the day. After lunch we had to team up students from a different school and my new partner was a girl from TRAC whose name was Nilara. I really enjoyed that because I met someone new and we both worked together very well and got to learn heaps of new stuff about each other. I also got to see different ways to solve the problems. During the day, Nilara and I both won 8 chocolates during the combined competition.

At the workshop we did many different puzzles and competitions, a lot of the questions were competitions and each of the questions we completed we would get a stamp - the aim being filling out the stamp sheet. I really enjoyed the questions we did at the start as the aim was to write down the answer as fast as possible and run to the teacher to get a lolly, I found it really challenging. During this competition I won several small lollies from the race questions at the start and a couple chocolates from the hands on question stamp sheet at the end.

We solved maths questions, mainly worded problems. I enjoyed teaming up with friends and I won a chocolate in the big activity where we paired with someone from another school.

We did riddles, puzzles and answered various questions about patterns, tree diagrams etc.  I enjoyed the problem solving questions as we used hands-on resources such as counters, strings ,shapes etc. I won lollies in the first and second round where we worked in pairs with a Kildare team mate. I also won a chocolate in the last round with a partner from a different school.

We did different mind challenges for prizes and points and I enjoyed working with different people from other schools.
Millie Drum

I enjoyed catching up with people that I knew and also meeting others that I didn't know.
I won a prize for the best score out of all the kcc students that went to the event and did the first trial of questions.
Leo Galloway

I most enjoyed pairing with someone from another school and working with them as it was something new. I won a trophy and a certificate and a block of chocolate for winning the final activity with a partner from another school.
Thank you.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to solve challenging maths problems that were hands-on and interactive. They also enjoyed the chance to meet and work with students from other schools. Thank you to Mater Dei Catholic College for organising this opportunity and to Mrs Lloyd for taking the students on this excursion.
