St George's Superstars

Production and Debating

Will Corcoran, Year 12

For the past four weekends our Performing Arts Captain Will and his dad, Joe, have tinkered for hours on their back deck creating an important moving part for centre stage of our upcoming musical, Frozen Jr.

Will, who plays Hans in the production, learnt how to use electric saws, clamps and drills to make the impressive wooden ice-cart that the character Kristoff (played by Jay Kapica) will push around for most of his time on stage.

Citing the wheels as the hardest part to create, Will said he was proud of what his family could provide as the props and costumes take shape ready for Murdoch University’s Nexus Theatre in July.

Bravo Will and Joe!

Novice Debating Team

Congratulations to our St George’s Novice Team for winning their debate, this Tuesday, against Shenton College. The topic for this week’s debate was that “Punishment of students should be conducted by a panel of students”.

This means that our Novice Team has only lost one of its debates and may consequently move forward to the semi-finals, for their level. I was particularly pleased with the way these three speakers came together to replace a missing team member. Each of these students has grown enormously in their preparation and their delivery of arguments. It has been quite a journey, and all the members of this team are to be congratulated for the resilience, engagement, and enthusiasm they have shown over the course of the season.

Special mention must be made of Ms Newbold who gave up her Wednesday lunchtimes to coach this team. Without her involvement, we could never have made this option available. She has done a great job of helping to refine the Novice Team’s understanding of rhetoric and rebuttal.

Our Junior Team was less fortunate, having to forfeit Tuesday’s debate. Special mention should be made of Alfred Keane, who stepped in, and allowed the debate to proceed.

Favourable mention is also due to Eli Holbeach for making himself available despite having to complete an examination the following day. Each of these students has gone above and beyond, showing great spirit and commitment to their team. Tuesday’s motion, “That marriage is obsolete”, was narrowly won by Perth Modern School.

The Junior Team will compete in their final debate on the 18th of June.
