Choose something new to pursue!

Co-curricular plays a crucial role in the student life of our school. These diverse and varied opportunities provide an excellent way for students to make friends, to meet new people across different year groups, to interact with staff outside of the confines of the classroom, to connect with their interests and passions, to discover hidden talents, to develop their soft skills and to foster their leadership potential plus, perhaps most importantly, to find that perfect opportunity for them to shine.

As the rehearsals for our School Production edge ever closer to Show Time, I am delighted weekly by the wonderful sounds of the musical rehearsals that are now in full swing after school here on Level 1. There are so many students involved in this production – both front of house on stage and backstage with props and costumes and makeup. I am super excited to see Frozen Jr come to the Nexus Theatre, Murdoch University for St George’s next month. It will be a wonderful way to start Term Three and recognise the multiple talents of the many students involved. Tickets are selling fast, so I encourage you to purchase your tickets through TryBooking if you have not already done so to ensure that you do not miss out and are part of something very special.

Team St George's
Team St George's

Last week I had the privilege of witnessing the camaraderie of co-curricular with the ACC Cross Country Championships at Alderbury Reserve, Floreat. Seeing ‘Team St George’s’ showcasing their talents after weeks of early-morning training sessions and competing for the School was a delight. It was thrilling to see both Fieke (Year 7) and Lia (Year 9) win their respective races, heading home in fine St George’s style ahead of more than 300 athletes in each of their year group races. I was also in awe of the many students who weren’t competitive or experienced runners but who braved the weather and gave of their best and performed their own ‘personal best’ on the day for the team. There were many close finishes at the end of each race to applaud. Congratulations to everyone who competed on the day.

Co-curricular activities are an integral part of a well-rounded education here at St George’s Anglican Grammar School with a wide range of new and different co-curricular opportunities being added termly to our program. Many enhance the academic pursuits of our students as well as fostering their passions and championing their diverse talents. Our Novice Debating Team are moving forward in a highly competitive field by winning their latest debate. House Week last week saw a wide range of fun activities take place across the school at lunchtime. Lego Club on a Tuesday has almost completed their target creation for the term and Homework Help continues to be a popular place to study after school. There are so many opportunities for everyone beyond the curriculum in a range of different areas – faith, sport, music, dance, drama, art, academic, gaming, puzzles, reading, creative – the list is exhaustive.

Our students are so fortunate and our staff so generous in giving of their time to support these many different co-curricular pursuits - I certainly did not have so many choices when I was at school!

By getting involved, students reap the benefits – they will improve their sense of wellbeing, enhance, develop and build their social networks, improve their academic performance, obtain a stronger sense of belonging to the School and build new skills to see them flourish here at school and beyond. There is much to love about co-curricular.

With the Term Three Co-Curricular Program being planned behind the scenes as I write, I encourage all St George’s students to choose something new to pursue in Term Three – they might just surprise themselves and master their newest and most accomplished skill as well as meet a whole network of new friends and teachers.

Warmest wishes,

Mrs Tina Campbell
