Art

Term 2, Week 10

Welcome to Term 2 Art News

It was wonderful to start the term with an excited and enthusiastic group of young Artists at BPS. This positive creativity has continued throughout the term. Hooray for BPS Artists!

This term in Grades 3 to 6 we have been doing a lot of Design and Abstract Art in painting, drawing, pastel and collage. We have looked to a range of Artists to inspire us; in particular the work of the Russian born Artist Sonia Delaunay.

It is exciting to see how enthusiastically students embrace learning about Artworks and Art styles from around the world.

Here is a snap shot of some of the work that is being produced in the Old Art Room at B.P.S.

Recently the Year 3 and 4 students went on a joint Art NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) Excursion and MSO (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) Music Excursion. We lunched at  Birrarung Marr Park which has a fabulous playground and picnic area along with a range of fascinating sculptures. Leading up to the Excursion, the students learnt a lot about the Gallery, the design work of Architect Roy Grounds, the arched Water window and The Great Hall. We focused especially on the beautiful full ceiling stained glass window that covers the whole space. This window was designed and created by Leonard French an Australian Artist who grew up in Brunswick.

Here’s a few pictures of our time at the Gallery and at Birrarung Marr Park.

What a fabulous group of young Artists and Designers we have at BPS.

The Gallery staff commented on how well the BPS children behaved at the Gallery and also what interesting and mature questions they asked about the artworks. I and the other teachers were so proud of our students.

This Term the Units we have been studying in Art, include the following:

Painting and Drawing

A BIG focus on Colour – Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Complimentary colours, Tints and shades using water-colours, acrylic paints, pastels and pencils, collage and mixed media on a range of different activities.

The ART Elements

All levels of the school have been having a focus on the six Art Elements: Colour, Line, Shape, Texture, Form and Space. These elements occur in Art. They are the ‘Building Blocks’ of our Artwork and help us to understand how to create in a way that enables us to share and visualise our ideas.

Senior students have extended their knowledge and drawing practice while working with focal points, optical illusions, repeated lines, type styles and fonts used in artworks and Design.

They have learnt about the three-dimensional nature of space and forms within a two  dimensional artwork with various viewing points and light sources - optical illusions.

Years Five and Six students have been introduced to the story of the printed image and the history of printmaking, typesetting and mass production of word and image, how the world of publishing was created, books came about and the Guttenberg press created a way forward where most people would have an opportunity to read and see printed images upon a page.

Junior students have focused on the season of Autumn, of colours, shapes and textures. They have learnt about and illustrated Art room animation where we learn to give every day inanimate objects a personality and character through line and expression.

*Masterpieces done at home and brought in to share

Quite often Students bring in special artworks that they have completed at home to share with their friends.

Well done Artists. Keep on drawing, painting and making Artworks in your spare time.

I hope you have a relaxing holiday.

There are many wonderful exhibitions on this Winter at the NGV, Lume, Geelong and Bendigo Regional Galleries. All a fabulous Arty day out. Have fun.

Best wishes,

Mrs. D.
