English Faculty News

This year, our school is targeting literacy development in our students through an independent reading program. According to educational researcher Richard Allington, students need more time to read and access books they enjoy to get better at reading (A Guide to Reading Workshop in the Middle Grades, Calkins and Ehrenworth 2017). Our school has been working hard with the purchase of new books and the implementation of Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time to promote and support the enjoyment of reading. We also seek your support to reinforce the expectations and benefits of independent reading at home.

As a parent, you know much more about your child than anyone else. We value your partnership and look forward to working together to continue helping your child grow as a reader. Making time to read at home is challenging, and life is busy! We understand. Please know that your emphasis on prioritising reading is beneficial for your child. Even if they cannot read daily, try to ask them to do what they can. Encourage your child to “steal” reading time as often as possible. Before bed, at the doctor’s office, in the car, at the pool…simply taking a book in the car “just in case” can open up precious minutes for reading opportunities that might otherwise be spent scrolling social media.

Because each family has different expectations for what content is appropriate, we strongly encourage you to communicate with your child frequently about what books he or she is reading. You can use websites like Common Sense Media and Amazon to research more about the books. Likewise, reading the books with your child would open the door for meaningful conversations about issues relevant to teens.

Along with this letter, you will also find a recommended reading list with high-interest novels and tips for helping students who say they don’t like reading. According to the author Frank Sarafini, “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” Don't hesitate to reach out if you struggle to help your son or daughter connect with a book. We will also work hard to help them with book selection at school.

Thank you for supporting our independent reading program.
