Wellbeing

Dolly’s Dream was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the shattering loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Dolly, to suicide, after ongoing bullying. Kate and Tick’s goal is to prevent other families walking this road. They are committed to changing the culture of bullying by addressing the impact of bullying, anxiety, depression and youth suicide, through education and direct support to young people and families.

Do it for Dolly Day is on Friday 9th May and BSC will be facilitating a brief (10 min) Webex Assembly at the beginning of Session 3 to share the message, provide students with strategies they can use to be an upstander and steps they can take to seek support.

IDAHOBIT DAY

(International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia)

IDAOBIT Day is celebrated annually on May 17th to raise awareness of violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) people. The date commemorates the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. The day is about promoting equality, acceptance, and respect for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics.

As May 17th falls on a Saturday this year, the College will be celebrating IDAHOBIT Day on Friday 16th May beginning with a flag raising ceremony during Session 3 which will also include speeches from BSC students and community service partners in attendance. All staff who are free at that time are invited to attend. Further activities will occur in Break 2.

TEEN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE

This week, Wellbeing staff began rolling out content in Year 8 classes for the Teen Mental Health First Aid course.

The course teaches students how to provide initial peer-to-peer support to a friend or classmate who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

Students learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the interventions and supports available.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, students learn how to approach a friend or classmate they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Students also learn how to offer initial support and information, how to encourage the person to seek professional help, and when to seek the help of a trusted adult.

The course is tailored to students in Years 7-9 (ensuring age-appropriate content is delivered) and is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program. Learn more.
