Grade 5/6

Miss Stephan and Mr Ward, supported by Mr Reid & Mrs Morse

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning about the important structures around the world and how they were built, we have learnt about the different foundations and forces and the importance of all the different parts used. We have been developing our vocabulary by learning the meaning of different words and using these words in sentences. Over the coming weeks, we will be using our new knowledge about skyscrapers to write an explanation piece about them.

‘To reinforce something is to strengthen it and add things to make it stronger’

‘The river Thames was getting dirty, but the city needed a better way to manage waste, so they built an underground sewer system.’

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been working hard on completing Big Idea 4 ‘Comparison: Numbers, expressions, and measures can be compared by their relative values’. We are so impressed with the work the students have been completing, managing to complete numerous tasks a day to prove their new understanding. It has been wonderful to see the support each student has shown to their peers by helping each other with challenging tasks.

Integrated Studies

This term our Integrated Studies topic is ‘Australia and our Asian neighbours’, over the past couple of weeks we have spoken about the importance of water, the land and different places that are significant to us. We have learnt about different children around the world, how they live and how it differs from our own lives. Over the next coming weeks, we will be looking at the ‘Australian Census Data’ to determine how many Australians have a parent born overseas. We will explore the stories of Migrants and Refugees and decide what important items we would pack in our ‘suitcase’ if we had to leave our homes.
