Literacy
In literacy, the 1/2s have been exploring the mentor text How Did That Get in My Lunch box?, which details the way that food is grown and processed, and everything that happens on the way our lunchboxes. We have been using the text to explore facts and opinions, and identify the authors purpose in writing. We have discussed the difference between facts and opinion, looked at how the language used can help us identify if it is a fact or opinions, and have practiced expressing our opinions (which we are all very good at!), and respectfully disagreeing with someone else's opinion.
We are using our knowledge of facts and opinions to help us identify an authors purpose when they write a particular text, using the PIE tool: Persuade, Inform, and Entertain. We have discussed features of text that help us identify what the writer was trying to do by writing their book, and have found that some books might have more than one purpose!
Numeracy
We have continued to investigate patterns and skip counting, and have been learning about the relationship between the two concepts. We have enjoyed making patterns with body percussion, shapes, colours, and numbers. We have become experts at identifying when something is a pattern, recognising the type of pattern it is, and noticing the repeating unit. We were gobsmacked the other day when we realised that when we count by fives, that there is a pattern not just where the numbers are in the chart, but in the final digit of the numbers! We were all very excited when we started using our knowledge of skip counting by fives and tens to count up to one dollar.
Integrated Studies
We have just started looking at sustainability, and exploring ways in which our decision can impact the environment around us. We were stunned to discover just how much food one family can throw away each year (around 250kgs!). We discussed food waste, and the different ways we can minimise food waste at home. We had a look around the green patch, and are thinking about ways we can make the most of that space at school.
