Principal's Update

Mr Brett Van Berkel

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the end of the first four weeks of this term, I am delighted to share some reflections and highlights from our vibrant school community. It has been a period filled with growth, learning, and numerous memorable events that have brought us together.

Appointment of Pope Leo XIV

Even though Pope Francis had been ill for some time, when the news came through that he had passed away on 21 April 2025, it came as a shock to the community. Pope Francis was a beacon of hope, compassion, and humility, and his leadership left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church and the world. His dedication to social justice, care for the marginalised, and efforts to bridge divides will continue to inspire us all.

In the wake of this profound loss, we also welcome the appointment of Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope, who brings a wealth of experience from his years as a missionary in Peru and a deep commitment to the teachings of Christ. His election marks a new chapter in the Church's history, and we look forward to his guidance and leadership.

Pope Leo XIV has already expressed his vision for a Church that is inclusive, compassionate, and dedicated to serving the needs of all people. In his first address, he spoke of his appointment as both a cross and a blessing, emphasising the responsibility we all share in spreading the Gospel and living out our faith in meaningful ways. As we navigate this period of transition, let us come together as a community to honour the legacy of Pope Francis and support Pope Leo XIV in his new role.

Academic Achievements and Initiatives

Our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication to their studies, and their achievements serve as a testament to their hard work and the support of our dedicated staff. Our Year 12 students have been actively participating in study skills sessions, English masterclasses, and VM industry visits. The recent VM market event raised over $1,300 for East Timor.

Our junior students have been engaging in the very successful Year 10 Careers Camp in Geelong, and our Year 8 students enjoyed a geography excursion to Buchan, exploring landscapes and landforms. Learning happens not only in the classroom but also through providing students with opportunities to experience learning beyond the classroom.

Community Engagement and Events

This term has been marked by the enthusiastic participation of our community in a variety of events. Our Facebook page has been alive with updates and photos, capturing the dynamic life at Catholic College Sale. The ANZAC Day service, the successful all-school athletics event, Careers Day, and numerous individual sporting achievements have all contributed to a palpable spirit of camaraderie and enthusiasm. The vibrant atmosphere and diverse opportunities available at the College enable all students to excel and shine in their chosen fields.

Master Plan Updates

We are excited to announce that the College has gone to tender for the construction of a new training restaurant at 29 Desailly Street, Sale. This restaurant will serve as our new hospitality training centre, with plans to open it to the public for meals and coffee. Building upon the success of Marian's Kitchen, which currently offers Certificate III in Hospitality and Certificate II in Small Business (Hospitality), the new restaurant is set to open at the start of 2026.

The new training restaurant will feature state-of-the-art kitchen facilities, a modern dining area, and outdoor seating to provide a comfortable and professional environment for both students and patrons. The restaurant will also be wheelchair accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. We look forward to this exciting addition to our campus, which will enhance our hospitality training programs and provide valuable real-world experience for our students.

Upcoming Events

Looking ahead, we have several exciting events planned:

  • Senior School Production – We Will Rock You: Scheduled for 20 and 21 May at The Wedge Performing Arts Centre. This event will showcase the theatrical talents of our senior students.
  • Marist Schools Australia Netball Carnival: We wish our team all the best as they travel to Sacred Heart College, Adelaide, to compete in the national carnival from 25 to 28 May.

In conclusion, the first four weeks of this term have been a period of growth, achievement, and community spirit. I am grateful for the unwavering support of our staff, students, and parents. Together, we continue to build a nurturing and dynamic environment where every student can thrive.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

Kind regards,

Brett Van Berkel
