From Mrs Chammen Year 6

What’s been Happening in 6C!

We've had a super busy start to Term 2. Our school leaders did an incredible job preparing and running the ANZAC Day parade. It was a big moment, and although we were nervous, we pushed through and proudly spoke in front of the whole school. We especially enjoyed hearing from our guest speaker, Joshua New.

Last week, Milan, Arek and Sophie C represented Gympie East at the Wide Bay Basketball trials. All three played exceptionally well! The girls’ team won 4 out of their 5 games, and the boys won 2. A huge congratulations to Arek, who made the Possibles and Probable's team – an amazing achievement! We also had a strong Gympie East team at the Tino Rugby League Cup. Well done to Riley, Cooper, Arek, Milan, Mitch and Jack for giving it your all.

One of the highlights of our week is spending time with our Prep buddies. This term, we’ve been teaching them how to play board games and helping them build their gross motor skills. Soon, we'll be introducing ball games to get them ready for Sports Day. As Peer Skills Leaders, we've also been running fun lunchtime activities like relays, oval games, discos, and even a colouring club!

In class, we’ve been diving into our Science and English units by learning about natural disasters. This is helping us get ready to write information reports. In Maths, we’re planning our very own Dream Holidays! We’ve been using websites to book flights, convert currencies, find places to stay and explore exciting tourist attractions – all while sticking to a set budget. We’re also using these skills to plan a “Year 6 Big Day Out” in Brisbane. Soon, we’ll be writing persuasive letters to Mr Elson and Mrs Chammen to convince them to actually take us. It’s a 3-hour train trip each way, so we’ll need to be very persuasive… stay tuned to find out if we’re successful!

This week, we helped Miss Maria and Mr Coombs with some serious garden work by spreading mulch around our school gardens. It was hot, sweaty work, but we pitched in as a team – some of us moved over 100 buckets of mulch! A few of us even gave up their lunchtime to help finish the job.

We’ve also been working with Mr Watson to build Spike Prime robots for our new STEM room. Be sure to check out the new sign on our STEM room door which we helped design.

Yesterday we received our first lot of information for high school next year and some of us are excited to apply for scholarships. We also received our first information note about our camp which will be a week at the Gold Coast! Exciting times ahead.

We are looking forward to a great term and we love being the leaders of Gympie East. We hope you enjoyed reading about what our class has been up to.
