On Tuesday, 3 March, Year 7 instrumental students participated in Turbo Day, a wonderful day of making music and forming friendships.

Over periods 1 and 2, students in Novice Band and Quattro Strings began learning what it takes to play in an ensemble, where to sit, how to follow conductors’ instructions, and how to create a great sound. Applying skills begun in instrumental lessons, they learnt how to rehearse as a woodwind, brass, string or percussion section. It was great to hear such a wonderful performance in Period 3, and we look forward to many more performances as the year progresses.

Many thanks to our conductors and teachers involved in leading this experience: Emily Kimpton, Sean Hamilton, Chris Ondaatje, Danielle Vita, Emily Fry, Pat Broadbent, and Jason Ziino.

Thanks also go out to the multitude of volunteers in other year levels who assisted on the day. Foreman Material (now Senior Jazz) performing at Robert Blackwood Hall in the 1990s.

Jazz After Dark

Audiences were treated to an impressive evening of music at The Round in Nunawading on Wednesday, April 22, when BHS Music presented Jazz After Dark.

The annual showcase featured Blackburn High School ensembles preparing to compete at the prestigious Generations in Jazz festival in Mount Gambier from May 1 to 3. The concert brought together a diverse line-up of performers, including the Senior Jazz Orchestra, Intermediate Big Band, Thursday Big Band, Frankenjazz, Concert Choir, JAM Chromatics, and The B Sharp Burners. Each ensemble delivered a polished and confident performance, demonstrating a high level of musicality and professionalism. The event highlighted the strength and depth of Blackburn High School’s music program, with students displaying technical skill, stylistic versatility, and strong stage presence throughout the evening.

Jazz After Dark once again affirmed the school’s reputation for excellence in the performing arts, setting a high standard ahead of the upcoming national competition.
