Year 9 Masks
Year 9 students explored ceramic techniques by creating ancient-inspired masks using the slab method. Students began by researching historical masks from ancient cultures to understand how masks were used for storytelling, rituals, and identity. They sketched their ideas, focusing on expressive facial features and symbolic patterns.
Using clay, students rolled out slabs to form the base shape of their masks. They then cut, shaped, and joined pieces of clay to build facial features such as noses, brows, and lips. Students experimented with texture, pattern, and carved details to give their masks a sense of age and character.
Throughout the process, students practiced key ceramic skills including slab construction, scoring and slipping, and refining surfaces. Once completed, the masks were left to dry before being fired in the kiln and later decorated with glaze or surface finishes.
