Teaching and Learning

Hello families,

With Home Reading now in full swing, I want to take this opportunity to outline the ‘Teesdale Way.’

The Junior School (Foundation, Year 1 and 2)

Junior School students will come home with their blue satchels. Inside these you will find ‘best fit’ books for your child to read with you and read to you. We ask that parents support this routine at home and encourage your child to log their book in their student diary. This is a wonderful study habit to establish, promoting organisation, independence and of course, the lifelong skill of reading! Our student diaries are also a useful tool to communicate with teachers who check diaries each day.

Students in Foundation will start bringing home some home library texts this week. Later in the term, students will bring home Elkonin Boxes to support their phonemic awareness development or decodable readers.

Students are also welcome to borrow books from our classroom libraries. As these books are not the decodable texts that support reading development, parents may want to read these aloud and discuss the story.

The Middle School (Years 3 & 4)

Middle School students continue their strong Home Reading habits as they grow as readers and begin to enjoy more complex texts. Teachers will provide decodable texts as required and students are welcome to borrow from their classroom libraries and enjoy chapter books, information texts and reading digital texts on their iPads. Epic Reading is common app to support reading digital texts at home. Middle School students can independently log their own reading, in the student diary. Middle School teachers check the diaries every morning.

The Senior School (Years 5 & 6)

Senior School students will continue their Home Reading for at least 20 minutes a day and log a wider range of texts. They will access books from classroom libraries and their iPads. As your child is reading more complex texts, don’t forget to use resources like the Geelong Regional Library located in Bannockburn. An easier (and cheaper!) way to keep encouraging your child to read at home. Senior Students can record their own reading in their student diaries too!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to myself or your child’s classroom teacher.

Happy reading!

Scholastic Book Club is a service offered to students, parents and teachers. Brochures advertising a variety of books and computer software are sent home with each student, approximately twice a term.  Orders must be placed via the online Book Club Loop platform below.

Purchase of the books is not compulsory and there is no obligation. If you do wish to purchase any goods simply log into the Book Club site www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP and follow the prompts. All Book Club orders must be ordered and paid for via LOOP. Do not send order forms and cash to school. When the order arrives at school, books are sent home with students.

The School earns “Bonus Points” for each order which can be used to purchase new resources for the Library.

Click here for the Scholastic Book Club Parent Log in page or to register for new users.
