What's Happening in Grade 2?

Welcome to a new year of learning with the Grade 2 team - Ms. Kerrie Elsbury, Ms. Ann Gemayel, Miss Tracey Ngo and our education support Sienna Skubevski.

We are excited to share what our Grade 2 students have been working on in class!

A central focus of our learning has been our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) lessons, where students have been engaging with our school’s behaviour matrix to guide positive choices. Together, we have been building clear classroom expectations and consistent routines grounded in our core values of Learning, Respect, Resilience, and Teamwork. These values extend beyond the classroom and are reinforced across all school environments to promote a positive and inclusive school culture.

We have also prioritised Health and Safety, supporting students to understand how to keep themselves and others safe in the classroom, playground and wider school community. In addition, eSafety remains an important focus, with students learning how to use digital technologies responsibly, safely and respectfully.

Our current focus in Literacy is strengthening students’ phonics knowledge to support confident reading and accurate spelling. Students are:

  • Exploring letter-sound relationships and blends
  • Practising decoding strategies when reading unfamiliar words
  • Building fluency through guided and independent reading.

In Writing, we are learning about procedural texts. Students are discovering how to:

  • Write clear step-by-step instructions
  • Use time connectives (first, next, then, finally)
  • Include headings, materials lists and numbered steps
  • Use command verbs (mix, cut, draw, build)

Students engaged in a fun and tasty procedural writing lesson where they made fairy-bread and they had to write down the goal, materials and steps included to successfully make fairy bread.

You might notice your child writing instructions for recipes, games or “how-to” guides at home!

In Mathematics, our focus areas are Place Value and Time (Calendar Work).

Place Value Students are developing a strong understanding of numbers by:

  • Identifying tens and ones in two- and three-digit numbersComparing and ordering numbers
  • Representing numbers using materials, number lines and drawings
  • Renaming and representing numbers in multiple ways.

A solid understanding of place value builds the foundation for addition, subtraction and problem-solving.

Time – Calendar Work Students are also learning about time through calendar activities.

 This includes:

  • Identifying days of the week and months of the year
  • Understanding dates and sequencing events
  • Reading and interpreting calendars
  • Recognising special events and planning timelines

You can support this learning at home by discussing upcoming events, marking important dates on a calendar, or asking questions like, “What day will it be tomorrow?” or “How many days until the weekend?”

We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort our Grade 2 students continue to show in their learning. Thank you for your ongoing support at home — it makes a wonderful difference!
