Celebrating Creativity and Expression: The ASC Arts Day Festival

All Saints’ College came alive with vibrant colours, singing, dancing, music, and artistic expression during the much anticipated annual “Arts Day Festival”.

This year’s celebration was a resounding success!

The festival kicked off with the exciting “Battle of the Choirs”. The theme for this year cantered around “Pop Groups”. It was a musical showdown like no other, each House took to the stage and delivered some incredible performances.

Battle of the Choir results were:

Forrest House (Sixth place)

Murdoch House (Fifth place)

O’Connor House (Fourth place)

Stirling House (Third place)

Cowan House (Second place)

Durack House (Winner)!

The ASC Staff Choir also got involved in the action, showcasing hidden talents.

Following the Battle of the Choirs, students were mesmerised with a performance from The Society Dance Crew and a dance performance from students in Years 7-12. The festivities continued with students participating in activities, such as graffiti art, face painting, Artist in Residence (Painting), Artist in Residence, (Pottery Wheel), Reclaim the Void - weaving, media extravaganza with movies, beanbags and popcorn, photo booth and even a cake bake off.

The College’s Music Department filled the air with live music, Mr Hosken (Year 9/10 Coordinator) was the DJ on the day. The Boost Juice van, Gelare truck and pizzas were definitely popular stations amongst the students.

The Arts Day Festival, reminded us, once again, of the profound impact and importance of creativity and expression and the positivity it brings to our world. Thank you to all involved in creating such a magical event.

Special thanks to the Friends of the Arts and The HotHouse Company.

Stirling House Supports Beyond Blue

In Week 8 Stirling House and the College Community showed their support for Beyond Blue. Beyond Blue is one of Australia’s most well-known and trusted mental health organisations.

Throughout the week students and staff participated in a number of activities that promoted positive wellbeing and connection. Stirling House would like to thank all student and staff for their enthusiasm and involvement throughout the week.

The Stirling Beyond Blue bake sale raised over $700 towards this important cause.

We hope that these initiatives have encouraged members of our community to speak openly about mental health, to ask for support when needed, and have emphasised the importance of regularly checking in with yourself, family and friends.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Stirling House Captains Grace and Josh, the dedicated House Council, Ms. Elscot, Stirling House and the entire ASC Community for their participation in this event.

Year 11 Psychology UWA Excursion

On Tuesday of Week 7 the Year 11 Psychology students attended a full-day workshop at UWA to experience the study of psychology on campus.

The students were treated to three fascinating sessions on social psychology (how the presence of others influences our behaviour), cognitive science and cross-lateralisation of the brain (the fact that information from the right visual field is processed by the left hemisphere and vice-versa, and how this influences memory), and neuropsychology (through an activity that simulated the effects of suffering a stroke).

The morning session was delivered by social psychologists Tim Kurz and Jo Watson, whose research focuses on influencing others to engage in moral behaviour. This session challenged the students to consider how they might use their position as student leaders to increase participation in College activities without offending others (a term referred to as “do-gooder derogation”). The general consensus from this research is that leading by example (i.e. servant leadership) is most effective, and being flexible in the standards to which you hold others is likely to interfere least with the friendships we have with others.

In the second session, students learned that in most people the right hemisphere of the cerebral cortex, which processes information on the left side of the body, is responsible for spatial processing, while the left hemisphere, which processes information on the right side of the body, is responsible for language processing. This is one of the reasons why AFL footballers are more likely to miss to the right when shooting for goal, and why people are more likely to bump into objects located on their right hand side. Students participated in a data collection task, in which they were given new names placed on name tags located on the right, centre of left of their chest. Following a speed-dating type task, they were asked to recall the names of the people they had just met.

Finally, after lunch on the Oak Lawn (which was alive with university students on their lunch break), our psychology students participated in an activity in which they had to trace around a maze while wearing goggles that vertically and laterally invert their visual field. This task required students to temporarily “re-wire” the signals their brains send to their hands for motor control.

The psychology class members were excellent representatives for the College, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many commented that it has helped them better understand what university student life is like. For others, it was an opportunity to get a better feel for whether psychological science is an area they will consider studying in their post-school journey.

French Tour

A select group of students and teachers from the Languages Department are gearing up for the much-anticipated French Tour, scheduled to depart on Saturday 16 September. The Tour will involve a two-week adventure in Nice, followed by an exciting week in Paris. Their return to Perth is scheduled for Saturday 7 October.

We wish them a safe and memorable journey and look forward to hearing all about it upon their return.

Sharing the Joy of Music

On 22 August 2023 ASC Music Tutor Mrs. Inna Fursa held her annual “Musical Family” Afternoon Concert. The atmosphere in the chapel was lovely, with excited students dressed for a special occasion.

With 29 students being seated in order of performance, parents enjoyed a slide show with inspirational quotes on music, ideas on mindful piano practice, and students’ photographs showing their achievements since the last concert.

Corbyn Murakami was in charge of the computer, making sure that the slide show was running smoothly.

It was a delightful concert. Henry Poplawsky mentioned that he liked that the audience was friendly and supportive, and he felt welcomed to perform for the first time in Australia. Leticia Avery expressed that she enjoyed listening to a great variety of imaginative, character pieces.

Mrs Fursa writes, “It was very rewarding for me to observe the children’s enthusiasm, eager to share their favourite pieces with friends and enjoy the experience. Every time I asked my students after the concert, ‘What was the best part for you?’ I was delighted to hear back, ‘Performing!’”

Mrs. Fursa performed Improvisation in La Minor by Francis Poulenc. The audience also was treated to a guest artist performance by MrsFursa’s ATAR Music student Oliver De Mellion. He brilliantly performed Tango by Igor Stravinsky.

After the concert, every student received a certificate featuring a quote chosen by Paula Krause, Inna Fursa’s former student who has recently departed to study music in Germany.

“The piano and the keyboard are not an alien, dangerous, and even hostile machine, but a familiar, friendly being, ready to meet you if you treat it lovingly and freely, and yearning for the closeness of the human hand as the flower yearns for the approach of the bee, ready to yield all its pollen.”

Alan Walker [Friderick Chopin, A Life and Times]

A big thank you goes to our Music Department, maintenance staff, and technology support staff for their support and assistance.

Year 12 Dance and Drama Performances

Congratulations to the Year 12 ATAR General Dance students and the Year 12 ATAR Drama students for their wonderful performances.

The ATAR Dance students performed an original solo. They were tasked with choreographing and designing a performance that “Conveys a specific intention”.

The ATAR Drama students performed two Monologues the first being a “Candidates Choice” and the second being a “Set Choice”.

These performances were performed as their final Dance and Drama assessments before exams, held in the Upper Theatre over two intimate evenings, in an up close, and personal setting. All performers were of a high standard, engaging the audience with their creativity and talent.

Thank you to Year 10 student Joseph Harrison for assisting with the Sound and Lighting.
