Father’s Day Celebrations

Kindergarten

Last week fathers and friends of Kindergarten students joined us in celebrating Father’s Day with a special ‘Loose Parts’ incursion from Pause Rewind Play.

Loose parts create richer environments for children to play, giving them the resources they need to creatively entertain themselves and their friends. Loose parts aren’t prescriptive and offer limitless possibilities. Through using loose parts, children are encouraged to be creative, innovative and imaginative. Natural objects are easily accessible and sustainable, and also offer many opportunities in play. Some examples include pinecones, shells, feathers and leaves.

The Kindergarten students, along with their guests, embraced a creative challenge which involved using everyday objects to craft innovative creations and games. We look forward to continuing to use these in our Kindy playground in the coming months.

Pre-Primary:

On Monday 4 September, our Pre-Primary students welcomed their fathers and special friends to our bush school experience. The day was filled with a variety of engaging activities.

One of the highlights was a minibeast hunt, where the students had the exciting task of seeking out and discovering minibeasts. They then applied their knowledge of habitats gained throughout the year to construct homes for these tiny creatures.

Following the minibeast adventure, they embarked on a scavenger hunt. Each student received a hunt bag and set out to gather treasure from their surroundings. These collected items were later used in creative artworks to weave stories.

To finish this adventurous day, everyone came together and gathered around a fire, where they were able to toast marshmallows.

Nulsen Residents

One of our highlights from this term has been the involvement in our Year 6 service projects. We have been catching up with the Nulsen residents on Wednesday afternoons to do art and craft activities together. This term, we made Father’s Day cards and gift boxes together. Among the individuals who visited our class were Sonya, Robert, Steven, Kevin, Glen and Matt.

Our crafting sessions were filled with joy and creativity as we worked on special gifts for residents’ fathers or significant people in their lives. Whilst enjoying these fun activities, we were able to grow and learn more about each other. We found out that we shared similar interests and aspects of personality, which made our time together more delightful. We all enjoyed our time together and are looking forward to next term, when we will create Christmas crafts with them.

Year 4 Incursion

On Thursday 31 August Ornithologist and Bird Guide, Mr Louis Masarei, came to share his top tips on all things birding with the 4C students. Of the approximately 800 species of birds in Australia, Louis has seen of 639! He showed students photos of some of the birds he has seen (including the rare ones) and shared his top tips on how to identify birds. As a class we discussed the ways human impact has affected bird populations and, in many cases, changed their behaviour.

After our chat, students donned their binoculars and walked down to the bush school area. We were lucky enough to try Louis’ professional telescope with a 70X zoom. Together students collected data on several birds including Yellow-Rumped Thornbills, Spotted Pardalotes, Grey Fantails and Western Gerygones. They were so engaged and eager to learn as much as they could about our native birds. This immersive encounter with birdwatching has nurtured empathy as students engage with the activity, fostering a profound understanding of the world around them and of our intricate place within the delicate ecosystem.
