Grade 1/2 making a difference

In term 2, during our Inquiry unit on Responsibility the grade 1/2 students have been involved with a project whereby they decided on a way to give back to the community.

Students wrote a persuasive letter to Mr. Shaw asking if they could run a free dress day with a gold coin donation in the hopes to raise money for this project.

Once they received approval from Mr. Shaw, students created posters to promote their free dress day around the school.

A wonderful day was held on Friday the 18th August. It was great to see everyone in free dress! We thank the community for your wonderful donations. We raised $260!

Our next task was to learn about several charities near and far. We explored the John Paul College Community Outreach van, CARITAS Australia, and World Vision.

Last week the 1/2s then gathered together to decide on their chosen charity. They chose to donate to World Vision.

Children had a great time selecting how the funds would be spent in World Vision. They decided on giving communities:

  • School supplies
  • Emergency kits
  • School Toilets
  • Food supplies such as chickens, pigs, seeds and eggs
  • Basic need items such as blankets and mosquito nets

This experience not only provided children with the opportunity to learn the Catholic Social Teaching around Preferential option for the Poor, but also gave them ownership and voice on how they can be responsible in the community.

We thank all the families who supported our students through this Term’s learning experience.
