Mac R - Year 12

Girl with a dragon tattoo – Stieg Larsson

Favourite book?

Girl with a dragon tattoo

What is it about?

A journalist and hacker are hired to investigate a murder.

What is it about the book that you like?

For me, it’s a ritual to read every year. Every time I read it, I see something new, something more.

Have you read any more books by the author?

I’ve read the series but haven’t gone back to the other books recently because the first one is such a classic for me.

When did you first read it?

I first read it in 2021, when I was 16. I didn’t fully understand it at the time. I watched the movie and thought it was a cool idea, so I’m going to go ahead and read the book.

In the movie, he’s forced to make the story make sense, but the book is a lot more intellectual and there is so much more to unpack.

What age group do you recommend the book to?

Older teens, 17- or 18-year-olds.

What marks do you give it out of 10?

Just 10 out of 10

Best of luck Mac in your year 12 exams!

David - Year 8

Flying Monsters with David Attenborough DVD

What did you watch and who did you watch it with?

Flying Monsters and I watched with my mum.

What was some of the interesting things you found out about?

There was one dinosaur which had a tail and it evolved down to a stump, it didn’t seem to have any use and I wondered why it would be there if it had no use!

David Attenborough thought that one dinosaur had a part on its head and used it like a fin on a boat to get through the air, my mum didn’t see how that was practical as a gust of wind could knock it off, it was odd!

What did you think of the graphics? The dinosaurs looked a little off compared to the surroundings it was placed in. It was a bit old.

Best thing about it?

David Attenborough.

What do you rate the DVD?

Rated 7 out of 10.

It felt like it should have had more in it and it ended too quickly.

Flying Monsters with David Attenborough is available to borrow from the library.

Alice D - Year 7

Coraline – Neil Gaiman

What is it about?

It's about a little girl who found a multiverse dimension door from her version of reality – a place where people have buttons for eyes and a witch would imprison them.

I've always liked the movie and the book is more detailed, has more instructions to where they are going and how they are doing there. It’s like I can picture it in my brain. There was a lot of adventure in it and the shocking twists and turns made my brain click. I also really enjoy reading.

Have you read any more books by Neil Gaiman?

Yes, I have read his books. They are good. I really like the style of writing to intrigue the reader.

Out of all his books, Coraline is my favourite.

Marks out of 10?

I give it a 10/10

Coraline is currently part of the Year 7 English curriculum.
