PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Welcome to Edition 7 of Community for 2023.
The Year of Excellence rolls on. From the Year 9 Central Australia Camp and athletics sporting success to victory on the track in Murray Bridge and the final Assembly for our Class of 2023, events in the first half of Term 4 celebrate everything that makes St Joseph’s College an amazing place for young people to grow and learn about creativity in all its forms.
Seven weeks has passed since our last newsletter, and our college community has used that time to enrich, inspire, and achieve, as you will see throughout the pages that follow.
Exploring Creativity
We are never too old or too young to explore our creative side. Art is always there, ready for us to exercise talents that could lead to hobbies, passions, or even a career.
Young people, especially, deserve opportunities to indulge their curiosity, to discover their interests, and to develop the skills they need to pursue those interests. After all, curious young minds are even now creating the careers of tomorrow, many which have yet to be invented or are only just emerging.
St Joseph’s College offers a wide range of subjects and extracurricular activities so that our students can try new things that will inspire their creativity. Once they have found something that suits them, we want to give them the tools they need to take further steps on the path to progress, wherever it may lead.
Performing Arts
When it comes to the Performing Arts, such as dance, acting, singing, and playing musical instruments, the college has been blessed with many gifted and accomplished students. Sharing one’s art can take quite a bit of courage at the best of times, but art that involves live performance demands bravery and a special level of commitment.
Working on a live production is also a lot of fun. The unique bonds students forge during rehearsals are made stronger because of the pressures involved in performing. As a result, those bonds endure long after the curtain has fallen. I am happy that the college is providing an experience for our young performers this year.
Returning to the Stage
After an absence of several years, the College Production makes a triumphant return to the Mercy Theatre this weekend with a Broadway Junior version of the Tony-winning smash Roald Dahl’sMatilda The Musical.
You may recall pandemic restrictions meant that we had to unfortunately cancel all performances of our 2021 production of Cinderella. So it is no surprise that, since it was announced, the excitement around Matilda has steadily grown.
Directed by a production team of college staff with theatre experience, our exceptional cast and crew have rehearsed for months to bring this singing and dancing extravaganza to life. They have memorised lines, perfected choreography, and built a beautiful set. Now these star performers are ready to share their talents with Sunraysia.
The tale of Matilda Wormwood will surprise and delight. Ignored by her parents, a brave and determined young girl possessing special telekinetic powers (yes, you read that correctly) motivates her classmates to rebel against Miss Trunchbull, their horrible headmistress. Get a taste of what to expect by taking a look at the dedicated page in this newsletter and by watching the special highlight reel on the college’s website and Instagram account.
You still have time to book tickets for all three performances:
- 7:00pm Friday Opening Night
- 1:00pm Matinée
- 7:00pm Evening Performance
I hope that you will come along and support the students and staff who have taken such great care in creating a hilarious and yet moving work of theatre that will amuse and uplift. Who knows? –You might even feel like singing and dancing along.
God Bless
Mrs Marg Blythman
