Year 5/6 Excursion to Scienceworks

Year 5/6 students travelled across the Westgate bridge to visit Scienceworks in Spotswood. This excursion linked to our science inquiry topic of light. Students have investigated light sources and have used torches and lasers to explore the way light travels. They have learnt about bioluminescence (the production of light by a living organism) and the glow worms in caves in New Zealand.

Students visited the Lightning Room theatre to take part in The Electricity, Magnets and Movement Show. This presentation was a hair-raising introduction to the world of electricity! Student volunteers experienced static electricity as we learnt how current electricity is made using magnets and coils of wire. At the end of the show we watched an amazing lightning demonstration using a two-million-volt Tesla coil and we discussed staying safe in lightning storms.

Students also had the opportunity to explore Sportsworks, an interactive exhibition which enabled students to learn all about the science behind moving their bodies. They raced against Cathy Freeman, tried being a soccer goalkeeper and zoomed down the slopes in a snowboarding simulator. They investigated their bodies’ height, flexibility, strength and reaction times.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the excursion to Scienceworks, and came home tired but with lots of wonderful memories.
