STEM

Welcome to our second STEM update for Term 4!

The Prep students have been learning about coding vocabulary and participating in a series of unplugged coding activities to build their confidence with writing commands that can be followed to trace a coding path listing steps to move an object around a map.

Our Grade 1/2's have begun investigating the types of forces that make objects move, and explored which forces were at work to create chain reactions and 'the domino effect' needed to make a 'dinosaur treat feeder' work.

Students in Grades 3 & 4 have explored magnetic force and the ability to move an object without an obvious 'push' or 'pull'. They conducted an investigation to determine whether objects made of different materials are attracted to magnets, and if all metals are magnetic. They were surprised by the results and will delve further into their findings to determine why this is so in the coming weeks.

The Grade 5/6’s have looked at a range of everyday household appliances to identify the different types of switches that make them operate and to determine if they perform more than one function when the appliance is in use. They have built a simple circuit incorporating components to turn a light bulb 'on' and 'off' and drawn a circuit diagram using symbols to represent the circuit
