Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
This term the Grade 5 and 6 students will be painting and drawing portraits, to begin they learned about the wonderfully strange world of Tim Burton. Burton is a filmmaker and artist famous for his unique, gothic-style movies, which are often a mix of spooky and whimsical. He grew up feeling different and was inspired by old horror movies, which led him to create characters with big eyes, thin necks, and pale skin with wild hair. His films, like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice, use a lot of dark colours and strange, crooked angles to tell exciting stories. His characters are visually characterized by exaggerated features like large, wide eyes, pale skin, and thin limbs, often with a Gothic or macabre appearance.
To draw characters that would fit in Tim Burton’s world, the students drew portraits that had large pale eyes, thin necks and small mouth and nose. They used black and white charcoal to smudge around the eyes and added light and dark tones to the skin. Here are some of 5M and 5T’s spooky portraits:

I absolutely love it when students bring in their artwork to show me that they have created from home, last week Patrick from 4O brought a lovely, framed landscape that was inspired by the mountains we have been making in the Art room. This week, Gus from 2A brought in his bird artwork, inspired by the study into Pete Cromer’s birds we did last term. It was a large, framed piece and he brought it all the way into the Art room, fantastic work from both Patrick and Gus who keep the creativity flowing at home!
