Year 10 Visual Communication Excursion - Exploring Design in the City

Our Year 10 Visual Communication students immersed themselves in Melbourne’s vibrant design landscape this week. The trip was designed to support key outcomes in the Visual Communication & Design curriculum and gave students first-hand exposure to Environmental, Industrial, and Communication Design in real-world contexts.

Throughout the day, students developed practical skills in sketching, photography, and design analysis, while exploring some of Melbourne’s most iconic creative and cultural spaces. The knowledge and inspiration gained during this experience will directly inform their upcoming folio and research tasks.

Students explored Federation Square on a Architecture and Design Tour as well as the Laak Boorndap test garden, ACMI and NGV International.

Lunch was enjoyed in one of Melbourne’s iconic laneways, offering a chance to appreciate the atmosphere and urban design of the city centre. In the afternoon, students embarked on a Street Art Walk, visiting Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, and Duckboard Place, where they captured photographs and explored the cultural and visual impact of street art in public spaces.

The group then continued to Bourke Street Mall, where they explored visual design elements in several major retail and heritage spaces, including the Block Arcade, Melbourne Central, and the Royal Arcade. The day concluded with time for student reflection and sketching at Emporium Melbourne, before heading back to Southern Cross Station for the return train journey.

This engaging and insightful day was a valuable extension of classroom learning and offered students a real-world perspective on the role of design in everyday life. A big thank you to the staff and students for making the day a great success!
