Year 5 Leadership

What does this opportunity mean for me?

In class Mr Reedy, Mrs Patterson, and Mrs Esther San Miguel have been discussing with students the leadership opportunities for 2026.

On Friday, Year 5 students will attend an in-house leadership session with Mrs Fellowes. In this session, students will discuss the qualities of good leaders, and which positions they may wish to apply for. This is an exciting time for our Year 5 students as they are soon to enter their final year in their primary school journey.

Note for Reference:

Communication previously emailed on Monday 15 September regarding Primary Student Leadership for 2026 to Year 5 Students and Parents. Leadership Overview Nomination Forms will be emailed home on Friday 10 October.

PAT Testing for Primary

Students in Years 2 to 6 will undergo ACER Progressive Assessment Tests in Reading, Maths and Spelling next week. Regular completion of these tests helps to monitor student progress over time and informs our teaching practice.

Please encourage your child to do their best on each test, so they really show us what they know. We will endeavour to complete tests early each day, to give students the best opportunity to shine, so a good night’s sleep, tasty breakfast, and fully charged device each morning will set them up for success.

Pre-Loved Picture Books

Canberra Tour Highlights

The Canberra Tour was a rewarding experience for all involved. The jam-packed itinerary included trips to the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery, Australian Mint, High Court of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy, Dinosaur Museum and Parliament House. Orienteering around the National Arboretum, holding a preferential vote at the Australian Electoral Commission and touring the Australian Institute of Sport with athletes were also highlights.

Learning through experiences is a very powerful tool and the trip allowed for many content areas to be covered. A special thank you to both Mr Tim O’Rourke and Mrs Penelope Patterson who helped make the trip so enjoyable and seamless. The students were respectful, resilient and wonderful ambassadors for Clayfield College throughout.

World Mental Health Day

As a community, one of our greatest strengths is the support we give to each other. That’s why on Friday 10 October, we will join with Australians everywhere to mark World Mental Health Day, focusing this year on the theme: Meaningful Connections Matter.

World Mental Health Day is a time to raise awareness about mental health, seek to reduce stigma, and encourage everyone, children, young people and adults, to be in touch with their emotional wellbeing.

This year, the campaign emphasises how connection, with family, friends, community, support services and with Country, can support good mental health. We know meaningful connections help people feel supported, understood, and less isolated. Having good supports and knowing where to turn creates resilience in children and adults alike.

Ways to support this at home include:

  • Taking time to listen and check in (ask, how are you? and really stop to listen).
  • Encouraging open conversation about feelings and mental health.
  • Modelling being connected (friends, family, school, nature, hobbies). Children often learn how to manage emotions by watching how us adults do it.

On Friday 10 October, students across both the Primary and Secondary School will be invited to participate in a giant Let’s Dance activity in the Assembly Hall during lunch to see connection in action.

In addition to this, we encourage you to start a conversation with your child/ren that:

  • Has them identify people and places in their lives that help them feel connected.
  • Includes sharing age-appropriate stories about how others have found meaning through connection.
  • Highlights the message that asking for help is a strength, not a sign of weakness.
