Primary Happenings

Step into Prep

Jo Bryant, Head of Junior Primary

The day was heading for a blazing 30 degrees, one that could have had a melting effect, but instead, it was hearts that melted at the sight of our nearly 90 Pre-Preps stepping into their DCC adventure for the very first time! With teachers at the front holding their Circle and Star signs high, a long line of eager little Preps followed behind, barely looking back at their parents (who were the ones needing the tissues!).

Once inside, our newest learners joined in with songs, rhythm sticks, movement activities and structured play as they explored their new classrooms. It was hard to believe this was their very first time connecting as a group. Meanwhile, the buzz of conversation among parents at the FOD-hosted morning tea was a perfect reflection of our warm and welcoming DCC community.

This special morning marks the beginning of an exciting journey for our 2026 Prep families, and we can’t wait to continue the fun as our orientation program unfolds.

Year 6: Shrine of Remembrance and NGV

Yin Kik Li, Year 6 Teacher and Eleanor Roberts, Primary Visual Arts Teacher

Year Six students recently visited the Shrine of Remembrance to deepen their understanding of Australia’s history. Guided by teachers and parent helpers, they explored a range of powerful artifacts and displays, gaining meaningful insights into the people, groups, and events that have shaped our nation.

The excursion provided an inspiring opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices and achievements that continue to define Australia today. The excursion was an enriching and memorable experience that deepened students’ appreciation for those who have contributed to the freedoms we enjoy as Australians.

The students also enjoyed exploring the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), where they discovered a diverse range of artwork and deepened their understanding of the elements of art. Guided by passionate and knowledgeable tour guides, the students learned how to look closely at line, colour, texture, and shape in different pieces. Highlights of the visit included The Banquet of Cleopatra by Tiepolo, which sparked thoughtful discussion about storytelling through art, Yayoi Kusama’s playful giant dancing pumpkin sculpture, and the beautiful stained glass celling in the Great Hall.
