Miss Katie Smith

Year 3&4

Students learned about heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) by cooking popcorn using a stove, microwave, and popcorn machine. They observed how each method involved different processes: conduction through direct contact with hot surfaces, convection through heated air, and radiation from microwaves. Year 3&4 students also learned about conductors and insulators by investigating how butter melts on wooden, plastic, and metal spoons when placed into a mug of boiling water, observing that the metal spoon, a good conductor, melted the butter faster, while the wooden and plastic spoons, as insulators, slowed the process by participating in a investigation.

Year 5&6

Students explored the concept of light reflection by using mirrors and torches to solve a series of challenges, where they had to manipulate the direction of light to follow specific paths. The Year 5&6 students also applied their understanding of light reflection to solve challenges in an online game, where they strategically used mirrors to direct light beams to complete puzzles.
