Sustainability News

Dear Families,

Have you noticed the weather getting warmer and windier?

Welcome to Buath Gurru – Grass Flowering Season!

During this season, in this part of Australia, we tend to see more unsettled weather. Weather that’s humid, windier and more unpredictable. While most days are drier, we get heavy downpours. And, because a lot of pollen is picked up in the air, it’s a time to be mindful of hayfever and even thunderstorm asthma. A lot of grasses are in flower at this time of year. While they add interest to the garden, they can get stuck in dogs’ feet and fur, so keep an eye out as it can be very uncomfortable!

You may also notice a lot of common brown butterflies flittering around – they love the blooms! Listen out for the kookaburras announcing the arrival and end of the day. There are a lot of fledglings getting ready to leave the nest during this time of year, too. And, if you are really lucky, you might even see microbats out after dark, feasting on insects in flight.

At school, you might have noticed the new green mesh fence installed near the front gate. Our incredible Gardening Club students have been busy planting out our Wurundjeri Season Garden around the Yarn Circle and the fence is to protect the plants while they grow. Super eager to see these little plants thrive, Garden Clubbers have been enjoying using our new watering cans to keep them growing on hot days. Students have loved learning about these indigenous plants including chocolate lillies, vanilla lillies, coranderrk / Christmas bush, lomandra, mat rush, murrnong, prickly currant, and more!

As these plants grow, all students at Bimbadeen Heights will learn about what animals they support, how they were used, and when to look out for flowers, etc.

We were very lucky to receive a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant to make this project a reality and we look forward to continuing the project next year!

As of this year, we are now an official Junior Landcare team! Go Bimbadeen Heights!

Until next season,

Miss Murphy
