Literacy and

Numeracy Week

Literacy

During homegroup, students were reminded of the role and function of different word classes within the English language. There was a particular focus on the grammatical functions of different parts of speech and reminders about more specific subsets of nouns, descriptive words, different functions and types of verbs, and the role and usefulness of conjunctions and prepositions.

Students were reminded of features such as:

  • Concrete and abstract nouns
  • Comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs
  • Prepositions of time and place
  • Verbs as having, being, perceiving and saying words (not just doing words)

Numeracy

During Numeracy Week activities, Year 7 students participated in fun activities that taught them the importance of basic numeracy skills such as reading from a tape measure, converting distances between centimeters and meters, calculating averages, determining the speed of an object, using a compass, estimating distances as well as many soft skills such as cooperating in teams, sharing ideas and working towards common goals.

Another component of the Numeracy Week activities were the maths problems that were written in chalk at the front of the College for students to attempt to solve during the day. Each day brought a different problem and students were given a raffle in a draw to win a canteen voucher if they solved the problem. The participation levels was great and well done to those who persisted.

A big thank you goes to the Mathematics staff who put a lot of time and effort into the organsing and running of the various events.
