Drama

Year 9

Students have been immersing themselves in the unit of ‘Scripted Drama’ this term, focusing on developing their performance skills as they prepare for their Term 4 play. Their creative work has centred around the play ‘Something Wicked’ by Kate Rice, a compelling piece that has challenged students to explore their own characterisation and stage presence while performing.

To begin the term, students were fortunate to participate in an engaging workshop with Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre, where each student learned valuable techniques to develop their onstage roles, including how to craft the backstory of a character to better understand their character’s motivations and emotions. This experience has helped tremendously in refining their acting techniques to enhance their performances.

After much rehearsal and preparation, Year 9 recently performed their play for an audience during Mater Dei's Drama Performance Night. Students were excited to share their achievements and hard work with family, friends, and the school community.

Year 10

Year 10 Drama students have been exploring the exciting world of ‘Physical Theatre’ this term, an energising and creative art form that uses movement as a powerful way to tell stories.

At the beginning of Term 4, students participated in a workshop with Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre, where they developed their group devising skills, learning to create engaging and captivating performances through physicality and movement. This experience prepared students for their upcoming assignment, where they worked to present a unique, movement-based story in response to a music stimulus. In addition to their physical theatre work, students have also been rehearsing their scripted play ‘Gate 38’ by David Megarrity, which they performed during Mater Dei's Drama Performance Night.

Year 12 Drama students (2025) have officially begun their HSC journey, delving into their Individual Projects as part of their major HSC performance works. This term, students have explored a wide range of ideas for their Individual Projects, from monologues to set designs, each option aiming to showcase student’s creative talents and skills. Year 12 have also been studying the topic of Australian Drama, focusing on the two iconic plays, ‘The Removalists’ by David Williamson and ‘Norm and Ahmed’ by Alex Buzo. These plays are central to understanding the historical, social, and cultural influences that have shaped how we view Australian drama in today’s society.

To support students within their HSC journey, all Year 12 Drama participated in a workshop with Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre as the beginning of the Term, where they developed their group devising skills in preparation for the upcoming Group Project component of their HSC. The workshop encouraged creativity and teamwork, providing valuable insights into the collaborative process. Year 12 students are excited to continue their learning and creative development as they prepare for the year ahead.
