Junior School News

Year 3 to Year 6

Exciting Junior School Updates for This Term!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates and activities happening across various subjects this term. Here’s a glimpse of what our students are engaging with in Physical Education, Science, Digital Technologies, and Languages:

Physical Education

This term, our focus in Physical Education is on Athletics for Years 3 through to Year 6. Students are honing their skills in running, throwing, and jumping events, while also enjoying various team games designed to enhance their teamwork and fitness.

In addition, our Year 5 and Year 6 students have embarked on an inspiring initiative—Jump Rope for Heart. They will be skipping not only during PE classes but also at lunch and recess to raise awareness and funds for heart research. It's a fantastic way to promote cardiovascular health while making a meaningful contribution to a great cause! More information at https://www.jumprope.org.au/faqs/parent-faqs.

Science

Our Science curriculum is buzzing with fascinating topics:

Year 3 students are exploring the sun’s role in our solar system, how it creates night and day, the four seasons, and the concept of shadows, which they will use to create sun dials.

Year 4 students are delving into weathering types: Physical (Mechanical), Chemical, and Biological. They are learning about how these processes affect our environment and the role of erosion in shaping landscapes.

Year 5 students are studying the entire Solar System, including the sun, terrestrial and gas planets, stars, constellations, and celestial objects like meteoroids, asteroids, and comets.

Year 6 students are investigating natural disasters, focusing on volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, and their interconnected impacts on landscapes and communities.

Digital Technologies

Our Digital Technologies program is brimming with creativity and learning:

Year 3 students are using Scratch Jr to share online safety messages, create a digital model of the Solar System, and explore photography with green screen technology.

Year 4 students are engaging with Scratch Jr to produce animated scenes with movement and speech, design a ‘world’ with navigable paths, and program Sphero robots to follow specific routes.

Year 5 students are advancing with Scratch online to create interactive games where characters overcome obstacles, and they are also gaining an understanding of binary code and its role in digital devices.

Year 6 students are leveraging video recording apps to create digital comic strips that explain binary code. They are also using apps for digital data collection and representation, enhancing their tech skills.

Languages

In our Junior School, students are immersed in Italian language and culture, currently celebrating Language week!

They are enjoying learning Italian through rich language experiences, delicious food, and engaging cultural activities, including the game of Bocce. It’s a delightful way to celebrate and connect with Italian traditions!

Music

In this term, our Year 3 to Year 6 students have been immersing themselves in the vibrant world of music as they refine their ukulele skills, hone their music reading abilities, and master the art of drumming. With a focus on rhythm, pace, volume, and tempo, the students are not only learning to play their instruments with greater precision but also developing a deeper understanding of musical dynamics. Whether strumming their ukuleles, deciphering musical notation, or keeping the beat on their drums, our young musicians are making impressive strides in their musical journey. Their enthusiasm and progress are truly inspiring, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth and creativity in the coming weeks!

We’re excited for all these enriching activities and learning opportunities this term. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education.

Warm regards,

Mrs Christine Pitman
