Our international students recently enjoyed an inspiring excursion to the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, where they had the chance to explore university life and learn about pathways to higher education. This visit was a valuable opportunity for students across all year levels to gain insight into university experiences and academic opportunities.
The day commenced with an engaging campus tour led by a current international student at UQ. This tour provided our students with a personal and detailed view of university life, showcasing the campus's facilities and the vibrant student community. The student guide shared firsthand experiences and offered practical advice, making the university environment come alive for our visitors.
Following the tour, the UQ recruitment team presented a session on pathways to university. This informative presentation covered essential topics such as admission requirements, application processes, and the variety of programs available at UQ. The session aimed to demystify the transition from high school to university and to equip our international students with the knowledge needed to plan their future academic journeys.
The excitement of the day continued with a hands-on activity organized by the Faculty of Science. Using LEGO bricks, students participated in interactive exercises designed to illustrate key scientific concepts. This innovative approach made learning about science both enjoyable and educational, showing how creative tools can enhance understanding of complex topics.
Overall, the excursion provided our international students with a valuable glimpse into university life and inspired them to consider their future academic pathways. We are grateful to the University of Queensland for their warm welcome and for facilitating such a memorable experience.
A special thank you to our teachers and the UQ staff who contributed to the success of the visit. We hope this experience has broadened our students' horizons and sparked their interest in pursuing higher education.
Our Year 8 students recently embarked on an unforgettable cultural journey, exploring the richness of Chinese heritage through a visit to Chungtian Temple and a culinary adventure in Sunnybank. This excursion, a highlight of their Chinese studies program, offered a unique opportunity to engage with traditional practices and enjoy authentic cuisine.
The day began at Chungtian Temple, where students delved into traditional Chinese arts. They started with calligraphy, learning the delicate strokes and techniques required to create beautiful Chinese characters. This hands-on experience provided a deeper appreciation for the art form and its significance in Chinese culture.
Following calligraphy, students participated in a Tai Chi session. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, they practiced the slow, flowing movements of this ancient martial art, gaining insight into its physical and mental benefits. Tai Chi’s emphasis on balance and mindfulness offered a refreshing break from their usual routines.
The students then engaged in meditation, embracing the tranquil environment of the temple to practice mindfulness and reflection. This part of the day allowed them to experience the calming effects of meditation and understand its role in fostering inner peace.
The cultural exploration continued with a visit to a local Chinese restaurant in Sunnybank, where students enjoyed a diverse array of authentic dishes. From steaming dumplings to flavourful stir-fries, the meal was a delicious introduction to Chinese cuisine and a perfect conclusion to their cultural day.
Overall, the excursion was both educational and enjoyable, providing students with a richer understanding of Chinese culture and traditions. We extend our thanks to the Chungtian Temple and the Sunnybank restaurant for their warm welcome and to the teachers who made this enriching experience possible.
Our Year 8 students returned with new knowledge and experiences, demonstrating their eagerness to embrace and appreciate different cultures. We look forward to more opportunities for our students to explore and learn about the world around them.
